Title: Loud banging front nearside. Now what is wrong? Happy ending
Post by: terry paget on 05 April 2015, 21:00:36
Last Sunday I retrieved daughter Catherine's 2.5 saloon, which had punched its n/s rear shock absorber into the boot. She had planned to bring it home Easter weekend for a change from winter tyres. Instead she came home good Friday, train Paddington to Didcot via Banbury (engineering works) where I would collect her in the 2.5 estate to convey her home.

All went to plan until, driving from Wantage to Culham laboratory, a loud banging noise was heard around front nearside wheel. Car still steered and braked, so I stopped in a layby. Could see nothing wrong, so proceeded slowly to Culham, where I ran n/s front wheel over a kerb. I turned it from lock to lock, crawling under it to examine source of noise. I found n/s anti-roll bar mounting detached, cap missing. I deemed it fit to drive, so collected daughter as planned, fed her and carried her home.
Next morning I found one bolt had vanished. so had the cap, but happily the cap turned up in the under engine tray, so with a new bolt all was well again.

Sorry. It seemed exciting at the time. I doubted I could get the car home under its own power for a while. That's twice in a week I have nursed sick Omegas along the M4.

Apologies for speaking out of turn, but are you special >:(

Not only have you admitted to using a vehicle on the public highway with some of the suspension detached, but also to driving a different car with a substantial structural failure.

For the love of God and the safety of other road users, get a recovery membership :-X

Is it 'dangle berries', the antiroll bar is nothing special, you could safely drive the car with it removed.

Get a grip

My issue was mostly with the rear shock issue... But knowingly driving a car with an Mot relevant defect can never be described as reasonable :-X

Its about making an informed and reasonable judgement which was done, would the anti roll bar clamp missing be considered a major risk, absolutely not.....or are you implying that the minute a bulb fails it should be straight onto a flat bed..... :y

This specific issue is far safer than say worn wishbone bushes, ball joints, bold inner tyre edges etc.

And with respect to the shock absorber, there was no description as to how the vehicle arrived for repair, only of how the owner returned to collect it.  ;)

A bulb should clearly be replaced at the earliest opportunity...

Will agree to disagree re the roll bar, but...

Each car once each way is how I read that...
