Title: Thats a lot of laptops
Post by: Ken T on 04 July 2008, 12:53:58
I mentioned a short while ago that HP had a reliability prob with some of their models and were replacing motherboards. I just spoke to the chap who picks them up and he is doing about 90 PER DAY in the Leeds area  :o :o :o  Do the math, he is picking up 450 per week just in the Leeds area, and there are how many pick up points in the UK ?. Must be at least 20, so 9000 per week needing replacement motherboards, all because the BGA IC joints are failing, I believe because of this lead free junk they call solder. That's going to hurt someone's profits.  :'( :'(

Never mind, couldn't happen to a nicer company.  I suspect their $11b profit last year will cover it (well, whats left after buying EDS)

I’m putting it down to lead free solder too... and just the fact that they are mass produced, and not built to last...

I’ve just picked up 2 faulty IBM t41p laptops. One had damaged plastics + no screen, other was complete but the graphics chip has bad joints onto the motherboard (so glad I didn’t pay the 3.3k asking price :o ) Ive made 1 out of the 2 :)

Lead free not helping, but at the end of the day, other companies have got to grips with it...

Well done !, IBM's are quite solidly built machines.

Yes,  you are right, we do get a number of other failures like this, eg press in a certain area and it will work, but nothing like the volume of HP machines.

Remember I bought one of these cheap chinese BGA rework machine. Well, I have given up on it, cause its so imprecise in temp control, that it either doesn't resolder the joints or it overheats the chip, killing it. Trouble is to get a good 2nd hand professional machine is about £3000  :o :o :o

got to start saving big time !
