Title: Dodgy wiring
Post by: omegod on 09 April 2015, 13:42:31
Just discovered this mess in our office, 6 unfixed wall sockets wired in series to power all the IT eqp't. Is this normal practice  :o

Any evidence of electrical testing recently... those green tested on such and such a date by so and so stickers :-\

If not it's almost certaily illegal... but nothing a quick call to the HSE can't sort out :D

Equipment is PAT tested, but IIRC the sockets it's plugged into aren't..

[edit] Looks fine to me, I mean.. it's not on fire, is it? ;D

Eh no
For info only, you can have as many 13amp sockets in series as you want but the run must start with a fuse spur with a 13amp fuse as protection for that run.
Looking at that (from my phone), it looks like the cable was twin and earth but has had the outer gray insulation cut back (again naughty if not in a enclosure).
Also they should be securely mounted on a board or solid structure.

If one of my lads had done that, he would be out of work and unemployable as a sparky.

Appliances are PAT tested but on closer inspection the cables are coming up through the floor through a piece of roughly sawn drainpipe that is chafing through the insulation. It will all be replaced  ::)

Just refit the panel and stop worrying.
Although it might be a good idea to check the fire extinguishers and evacuation procedure.
Just in case, you understand.

In my many years in the decorating game, I saw that situation more times than I have had hot dinners. It seemed to be the norm where IT was concerned. ;D

Behind my telly/computer always ends up looking like that, as I try out new fixes and leave the old stuff there. It's perfectly ok until I try to work out what it was I was trying to do in the first place.
I have a large bag in the garage crammed with all the old leads and connectors I ever used. Must be 10 or 12 scart leads in there. Might come in handy.  ;D

I imagine that lot used to be enclosed in a power pole and someone wanted to move their desk two inches so the pole was ripped down and the chaos you see there is the result.
