Post by: steve6367 on 13 April 2015, 21:34:04
Does anyone know what the tread is on each end of the front track rods?

Many thanks

On 1 of those I got from the scrapper, I have it all freed up and working well but where the securing nut goes on top of ball joint I have damaged the start of the thread slightly  :-\

Tidy up with a needle file? Or similar tool. Hack saw blade with a rag wrapped round it for a handle, used like a file...?

I wanted to try re-cutting it, but good idea if I can't find out what thread it is....

Sorry, found this with a droplink once - I lost the nut, so got another nut off a spare droplink, only to find it was a different thread  :( so unless you're sure that track rod is GM, and someone can check their genuine GM one... or you're sure it's QH, and get someone with a QH one to check the thread etc etc.. then not sure what to say. As advised, cleaning up the thread with a file will get your there eventually.

I believe it is GM as it has GM and PN stamped on it, but yes I can crack on with the file  :y

That's what thread files are for.

If one happens to have a thread file handy :)

....and if he had one, I'm sure Steve would have used it. ::) ;D

....if wanting to take such pedantry to the absolute limit, one could argue if one has a hack saw one doesn't need a thread file. But, that would be equally silly. ;D

Equally, if anyone actually knew the thread size, they would of said so, instead of all this nonsense. ;D

I've never heard of a thread file.....

Something like this?

Confess I had to google it, and don't have one in the garage.

If it helps,

Originally it was an M12

Steve

That's the thing.
Meant for just this sort of job.
I keep forgetting to buy one when I see them; they're one of those rarely used but pay for themselves everytime you use them tools.

Swmbos nail board should suffice...

Assuming of course that A) you have a SWMBO, and B) she won't mind you borrowing it :D
