I'm always harping on to my missus that Twitter is a useless distraction as she sits half watching the telly and typing away. But this morning I had to admit that it can be an amazing tool.
With everything that's happening in Nepal, mountaineers are able to tweet from various camps on the side of Everest to let people know what is going on up there. Great that family members know that they're safe and an amazing insight for the rest of us.

Never bothered myself, but has its uses

As you say has its uses. :y
Personally I dont social media myself, dont have any accounts with twitface, fckubox or what ever there called, and Im still trying to work out how the Google home page knew it was my birthday recently, and displayed the 'google' made up of birthday cakes and a message saying 'happy birthday Chris' :-\ :-\ >:(
-
How did we manage before social media and mobiles? :o
-
They clearly have comprehensive signal coverage in Nepal probably even 4G? It's great that it is aiding in the recovery efforts! :y
Compare that with the service here where I can't get a signal at all in parts of Devon! >:( ::)

Doesn't necessarily have to be Twitter. Any web site will do that has people you want to contact. For instance oof would do, if people knew to find you there.
Personally I'm quite glad big brother is watching given the security situation recently. However Google is doing a VERY good job of buggering up the Internet as far as I'm concerned. Bloody google ads are infuriating. Thank god for the poofty lefty BBC web site. Some piece and quiet on there.
