Found out earlier that plug wells are full of oil,so new cam cover gaskets needed if not new covers as well.So been looking on e-bay[I know,I know should be GM only-but money's tighter than tight at present]Vaux-world are doing them at £14.95p a set unbranded, while euro car parts are doing some at £29 odd by ehlrig. The cheaper set has four separate gaskets plus "o"rings where the dearer set just has two gaskets with a bridging piece joining each banks gasket together.Which would be right for the 3.0litre?Or is there no difference other than the joining bits at each end?
-
Forgot too the cheaper set seems to have some curves in the long sides whereas on the dearer set has straight edges?

Dbug has a set fitted he got from AllGermanparts as I remember . . .
that seemed to be holding up well and were reasonably priced ;)
VauxWorld ones are like liqourice bootlaces . . . useless . . . avoid at all costs IMO

Currently testing a set of 12 quid cheapies from eBay. Seem to be holding. Done last August.
Not promoting them but testing them.

Way I see it if you fit some cheap n cheerfuls and once a week or two check your plugwells for oil. If, after a few weeks you've got weeping, then ah well, looks like it was a false economy, as the good Mr The Bear says, he's testing some cheapies, they've held up for 8 months or so up to now. OK, I'm sitting on genuine Vx ones, but given the apparent recent cost hike I'd be sorely tempted to try some cheaper alternatives myself, if I had the job coming up.
-
The Vx ones are good for 100k+, so install them correctly and keep your breathers clean and its a no brainer.

Got mine done at 80k by Daz so they were done expertly. Genuine gaskets used obviously. Needed redoing at 100k. Yes, i only do around 5k a year so they did last 4 years in fairness.
However, cheapies from eBay have lasted 6 months already and I'm regularly pulling plugs n leads out to check. All bone dry so far.
If I get a year out of them I'll be pleased. If they fail tomorrow I'll consider what to do then.
The test continues.
-
Edit.
Me and martin did them inaugust. That's 8 months.
Ps, to reiterate again I'm not going against OOF advice. Just wanted to test some cheapies for myself. If I have to do them again soon I'm prepared toitake the hit on the labour. :y

Well I've finished up buying some by a company called FAI at £17.44p the complete set,so I'll see how I go with those, although I would like to get a pair of straight covers.I paid an ex-Vauxhall mechanic to do them a couple of years ago and it turns out [now he tells me!!]that he "guesstimated"the torque values of the cover bolts! So this time around I'll borrow a torque wrench that'll read that low and do them myself.
-
8nm really dosn't feel very tight and it's very tempting to nip em up a bit more! ::) Resist!! ;D
I'd say that almost certainly your mechanic over guesstimated them. ;)
-
If you're in my neck of the woods feel free to borrow mine, brand new Halfords one :) Or nip them a fraction, drive to mine and get them nipped up 'proper'.
