Re the Lakes visit.
Granted we were a bit late on leaving Burns Farm this afternoon - about 4 o'clock, but as we were heading back to the 'van Linda was marching across the fiel to unplug us because we were 'stealing her electric' & apparently we owed her another £8!
I sent a £10 deposit way back, and when I turned up, I said who I was to her daughter(?) who then asked for another £10. As far as I was concerned that was that. To then be screemed at across the field 'cos we apparently then owed more money really p***ed me off.
It's perhaps a good job that we're banned next year, not that I think we'd want to go back, cos Burns Farm seemingly needs to go on communications & organisation course so the left hand knows what the right hand is doing. As far as Linda was aware, we were going to use the field on the other side of the wall from where the 3 caravans & Mark(Chopsdad?) were pitched, but we all pitched where the daughter(?) told us on 3 seperate sections of the site.
Considering the number of paying customers in tents on the 2 or 3 pitches at the opposite end of the site I don't think that Burns Farm did too badly out of the week end despite of us 'stealing' some electric!

banned?????!!

Ljay tore the daughter off a strip as well.
They told Chopsdad we were no longer welcome, though the daughter fooked it all up. Dozy bint changed her story every day.
So we could share electric hookups, we squeezed 4 tents in 2 pitches, then she wanted to charge us more as we were parking in another pitch that they thought they could sell. Couldn't get it in to her head we were already saving pitches with 4 tents on 2 pitches. She was also moaning that tents were getting bigger now. FFS, she's an effing campsite owner.
The incompetitence of the women who run it aside, it was a good weekend.

She seems to think that we short changed her. She started on about Radcap to me ....... for which she was told to 'discuss' it with them & not me! >:(
Daughter(?) wasn't too happy about cars being worked yesterday though either. Not that I think any of the other punters had anything to say about it. No noise being made, all mess cleared up, we weren't encroaching on anyone else's pitches.
Linda will be reading this ...... hopefully.
OH! And she has all our registrations! :-?

Sounds like they couldnt organise a piss up in a brewery from the bits I have read on the forum.

Will she?
Plenty of other sites I expect.
Not universally popular - mind a lot of site pee someone off, this is why I like CLs

Sadly i couldn't attend this one. The first one was great, only marred by being accused of making some one else's noise which she did apologise for later. Seems she failed her O level Commerce given that it could've been an annual earner for her, but given her attitude to paying customers & the lack of an allocated field which was promised maybe it's best to source a friendlier site next year.
Otherwise i hope you all had a great time.
Guy. :y

And why does she need them? Data Protection laws clearly state that she is only allowed to have information required to run the business, and that information must be secured. Not written on several sheets of paper like I know the rest of out details are.
We all paid the amount she asked. If she cannot arrange a piss up in a brewery, that really isn't our issue.

Chopsdad has a plan, and it doesn't involve Burns Farm.
May even be chance of a 'out of season' Lakes meet that does not involve tents :-X

It will cost them a minimum of a 5 spot per number to find out who owns what from DVLA, as far as I recall, perhaps more.... ;)
They were zoomers last year... Nice to see they remained consistent.... :y

So having looked at the pictures of this place and location im absolultly convinced we stayed at this site years ago (like 4 or 5) when we had a caravan and a mondeo....
Anyways just to proove me right or wrong, the showers were acros the country lane from the field??
If im right then the silly woman in charge 'misplaced' our booking (we were touring the lakes so booked from a site at coniston) and we had to make very much moaning to stay...
Also the electreic hookups kept fusing :@
Or i could be totally wrong. But never mind

I get the impression from the link that Martin I posted, that the toilet block on that we used was new, & there just used to be a toilet block across the road.

I believe they have built a new shower block on the same side as the field now but yes the electric hookups were somewhat temperamental which I believe was explained as some camper having faulty equipment plugged into the supply.
-
Okay it sounds the same place.... down the country road at the end i think there is a car museum or some kind?
Also one lil bit of advice for any caravaners from when we went, there is this brilliant CL caravan site near Coniston, forget the name of the village. ITs really small, few facilities but by a brilliant pub.
-
Para-phrasing Groucho Marx: "I wouldn`t want to stay on any campsite that would have me as a camper" ;D
....Must`ve been a hell of a good weekend for you all to get banned; I REALLY wish I`d gone to Keswick now! [smiley=cheesy.gif]

Only stayed at one site I would not go back to (noisy) and that was at Bream.
Others I have been to though, too expensive, or don't like the nearby area but only one bad site

You are spot on! The old shower block was across the road and the electric tripped out 4 times in Jimbob's tent yesterday.
The original plan agreed with myself and Linda was to use the "rally" field for the tents and throw a few lines over the wall from the caravans. But according to "daughter", lets call her Miss Happy for ease, because we had so many people needing electric she had to split us all up, and some people even had the cheek to phone up this week and ask if they could connect up if at all possible!
So instead of simply saying "Sorry, all gone" she greedily squeezed in as many paying customers as possible and then moaned about it all weekend.
The only valid issue she had was that one chancer from here blagged a £5 per night special site booking fee, and then set up camp with slightly more than a "small tent" by claiming it was all pre-arranged. That's fine if you're on your own, but it did cause problems for other group members and started the non existent "problems" because it really got her back up.
We were never officially banned, but when I told her we would not be coming back again, she as much as said that we weren't welcome anyway!
But basically, mother is nuts and daughter didn't fall far from the tree and we were not made to feel valued or even welcome.
Thanks to everyone that turned up and for the on hand helpers and I guarantee that next year will be an "upgrade" on 2008.
Still enjoyed myself though and it did unite us all..... OOF forever! :y

;D Go on I dare you!
She was adamant that we owed her another £8 but I bet she's not very quick at giving The Shyboy £2 back. He'd paid £30 for the 2 nights but - as Linda screamed at us a couple of times - her web site states that site fees weres £14 a night, apparently if you read it. ::) :y
-
Shame that site was ran by a miserable person though cos it was in a brill place. And if the leccy didnt cut out whenever i put kettle on (to get through the wife watching deadenders) it woulda been better.
Another caravan site we stayed at in the lakes (a few years later) was ran by a total wino.... very interesting since she was 70 odd. As our mondy had taken a helluvalot of punishment (8 years with my younger kids, never serviced, 140K miles, very heavy caravan etc etc) the battery died. She couldnt help. Lucky the caravan battery was good enough to start us to get to a halfrauds....

Wonder how James V6 & Maria and Mr & Mrs KW are enjoying Linda's "hospitality" this evening?

Unfortunately she does not have any concept of how to run a hospitality business, still" you reap what you so" she has just waved ta ta to several hundred pounds of income per annum, her loss.
Anyway as far as I am concerned she didn't spoil an excellent meet.

Didn't know there was one behind. You talking about the pub just uphill from coniston hall, can't remember the name now, the ship rings a bell.

If there was ever a meet near Blackpool I know of a farm site near Garstang where we could take over as much as needed. The owner is really easy going & would work out some kind of deal for us. Site capacity is about 100 caravans and it's arranged in a big 'U' shape. Shower facilies are primative at the moment but a new building is being put up this year with a large
drinking games room.
-
Okay loked on google earth and its a few miels from Coniston, a lil hamlet called Torver. Right near it is a caravan club site= nasty
but a lovelyp ub with nice caravan site close by. except we were there for the 4 most rainy days on any holiday and had to use someone elses car to get out of the mud bath

Don't know about linking up to Photobucket but I could've linked a bucket of something to her. It was the way she screamed at SWMBO demanding another £8 ..... as though we should've scrutinised her bloody website for charges etc. We paid what we'd been told to pay & had no need to look at her site as all the info I needed ie where I was going, had been posted here at some time or other.

I did seem to get the blame for every thing:
the leccy tripping out,
the difference between the amount of people who booked and turned up,
the lack of info from our 'group leader' (chopsdad),
the lack of parking space,
the ladies being constantly full of duke of edinburgh students.
considering we paid nearly 60 quid for our pitch i think i had a right to be pissed off!
she wanted to charge us another 14 quid to park our cars near our tent! She had crammed 4 tents in 3 pitches and not taken parking into account!
I also missed out on the bbq as she wouldnt allow us to use the same spot on the second night and we had 4 small children asleep in our tent!
Missed the opportunity to share my views with the mother though!

I'd thought as much.
SWMBO went into full rant mode after joining the review site last night but it's still isn't available for viewing. You'll recognise it I'm sure but she went under the name of Netty Noodles ;)

Well reading through this lot it looks as though I have had a very narrow escape!
I was thinking of having a Spain meet at our gaffe. Not sure I would have welcomed people squeezing between our olive trees, pinching electric, having BBQ's, staggering back from the bar 400metres away late at night, bombing in the pool, or generally lolling around relaxing.
Shame as I could have done with some help changing my gearbox and cambelt. Oh well plan B.

TBH that site is a bit control freakery but it does have a useful searchable list of sites.
I'd recommend a facts not emotions post

Wonder how James V6 & Maria and Mr & Mrs KW are enjoying Linda's "hospitality" this evening?
He He. Just got back (29.8 MPG - maybe I'd have made 30 if I hadn't played with that Audi on the A34 :-X).
Anyway, more moaning last night. Only the 5 of us there so we were sat outside a tent having a couple of tinnies and a quiet chat. Daughter comes over and says that they'd had some complaints and would remind us that the site has a quiet rule after 10 PM, but that "we were OK". :-/
So, if we were OK why did she bother? And who compained? When? About whom? ::) >:(
.. and if there was a quiet rule why didn't that apply to CaptainZok and I who were still busy putting the world to rights at 2:30 AM the previous morning?
Still, managed to find an unblocked toilet this morning which was a turnup for the books.
Total shambles on the part of the camp site. Making things up as they go along to suit themselves. If you pride yourself on running a quiet camp site the last thing you should do is to take on a large group and distribute them all over the place, surely?
Anyway, it didn't really spoil what was a great weekend. Good to see everyone. :y

Wonder how James V6 & Maria and Mr & Mrs KW are enjoying Linda's "hospitality" this evening?
If they're in a mig, I bet its hidden under a bush by now ;D
Its a bloody shame the aggro that was going on during the weekend, because when we were left alone( eventually), we were having a really nice time there.
Yes there was work being done on a few cars, but at no time were we upsetting anybody else. No fluids were dumped on the ground. OK, I'll accept (just) the point about tools lying around, however all the cars being worked on were in the one area, apart from chopsdad who needed hard standing for the exhaust, and the tools were between those cars only. when we were finished, all tools & rubbish were moved even down to the empty coke cans.
Alot of the points & moans from the daughter resulted from her cack handed organisation.
If, as has been said already, we were to be sited over the wall, no one would have been any wiser to what we were doing
If she hadn't tried to squeeze us all together with no room, we wouldn't have needed to park all the cars en-masse in the one corner
With a bit of thought & common sense, the members here & the owners could have worked together to organise a yearly event in the same place that would have grown, both helping the forum & generating a fair wad of notes for the owners.
maybe someone should email them this thread :-X

Not taking her side by any means, but her inital problem was the amount of no show on her list.
She had kept us a lot of pitches, claiming to have turned away business because of us, although had we been in the original location (with a little power) there would have been no issue.
She then wanted us to move our cars of the electric pitches so she could sell those on, that is fair enough in my mind, the cars squeezed in anywhere.
Noone looked even remotely annoyed at the work going on, one even asked if we did fiat's at one point, lots of interested looks from others,
and a poor Omega driver didnt know what hit him when he arrived at the site in his car, unaware of us lot gawping at him ;D
I can understand her aprehension at car work going one, 'its a campsite, you could be spilling oil and allsorts everywhere, kids need to play etc' although no mess was made or left.
Moving the BBQ site was a big headache to us, and in reality it was from by some family, to by some others. not as if we were making noise anyway, just chatting.
She was very obnoxious, and never stopped yelling who's is that car, ill charge you if it doesnt move, who's is that tent, they havent paid fully yet etc. We were not made to feel welcome at all.
We werent very welcome last year, so was suprised our booking was accepted this time.
It isnt even what I would call a nice / good site, much better about, but group bookings are the issue
-
Not taking her side by any means, but her inital problem was the amount of no show on her list.
.. but she could have asked for a deposit. Surely it's not unusual for a camp site to get a few no-shows when it's pi$$ing down?
Conversely, JamesV6CDX booked in advance but was initially told the site was full on Saturday night and was only given a (caravan) pitch after arguing the toss. >:(
It isnt even what I would call a nice / good site, much better about, but group bookings are the issue
It has the potential to be a lovely site, but requires management who know their @rse from their elbow.
Kevin
-
Surely she made money from deposits from the people that didnt turn up.
-
In two sentences, they are working in the "hospitality" business, and they haven't got a bloody clue, about organisation, customer relations, site management, (including blocked toilets and insufficient supply of hot water for showers etc). the working relationship between the mother and daughter was a classic case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand was doing, not an ideal trait when your running any business.
-
Quite agree. I like paying deposits as you can drop out last minute without feeling guilty, as they have the opportunity to make more money out of you by reselling the pitch.
Have stayed on some lovely, far friendlier sites.
Even last year she was a little hitler before we even began doing anything.
They seem a load of jobsworth's who dont want to be helpful.
The farmer seemed very pissed off to have to keep resetting the electric, but if his setup worked, surely he shouldnt have to!

That's the key, I think. It's fundamentally a farm where the camp site is just an additional irritation on the side. When you're dealing with animals all day, your standards of hospitality can be allowed to slip a little, and it doesn't really matter...

Someone should have filled her outside waste pipe with expanding foam, remind how bad the toilets are. ;D ;D

Watchdog is a good place to talk about problem companies, bet the are a few complaints up and down the country from various people.
Maybe worth contacking them to see if they have a file on "Campsites"

Firstly a massive thanks to Chopsdad for organising it again. It really was an enjoyable weekend, very worthwhile.
The dozy daughter who was left in charge had been getting on my wick since my arrival on Tuesday.
On arrival, I said we were supposed to have the overspill field so we could be all together. She said no, as she wanted us all together, so would squeeze in the main camping field (?!). I couldn't get it in to her head. I suggested throwing some leccy cables over from caravan field into overspill field, but she said no as she had booked some vans in down that end of van field. Then we agreed that those needing leccy would be in main field, and non leccy in overspill field, which then seemed like best compromise. Next day, she said as they were so busy, they would put non leccy members in main field. Upon trying to explain the (lack of) sense in that, she said she had the room. Then she said she'd keep non OOFers away from us, then prompted put a load in right next to us.
The stupid woman changed her story every single day (and I was there 6 days), and every time I told her that was not what we had previously agreed, she just started moaning. The women who run the site obviously have no organisational skills, are too greedy, and the pair of them are either bad liars, or a couple of sandwiches short of a picnic.
As with last year, any plan went out of the window in an attempt to squeeze in any tent to make a few more quid. Obviously the facilities are not good enough for this. The main block has 3 crappers, 3 showers and 3 sinks (presumably ladies have 3 of each as well?), which simply isn't enough for the number of people they are catering for (and we were lucky that a group of about 20-30 people staying were away for that weekend, else it would have been much worse). Quite clearly, the electrics couldn't cope either.
One day, the daughter was moaning that people were buying bigger tents now. That shows the greed of the family that run it.
-
So are their filing systems like DVDs on a train?
as Keswick is unlikely to more to wales
-
The owners didn't detract from a brilliant time, unless your name was Ljay who bites every time ;D

Considering the number of paying customers in tents on the 2 or 3 pitches at the opposite end of the site I don't think that Burns Farm did too badly out of the week end despite of us 'stealing' some electric!
hi dont worry about it i live in that neck off the woods and good friends of mine run a campsite at the other end of bassenthwaite lake and you would be more than welcome,he also runs a garage and bodyshop on the same land.so if any repairs need done its on hand,i hope this helps, bighuck :y
Thanks Bighuck...if plan b doesn't come off - which will be kept under wraps until I have it watertight and foolproof (so no campsite owners please) this may be a good alternative.
How west cumbrian are you then - Marra or Jameater?

She can lay no blame with us......if the no shows are a problem that is her buisness model that is at fault by not requiring a deposit to book a pitch.
As for the electric tripping, it concerned me as there is clearly little or no descrimination because if a fault in a single user connection had occured it should have tripped the ELCB or MCB in the hookup box....th fact it tripped the main feed sudgests that the install is sub-standard and being run continuously at max load.....

Exactly, while understanding being pissed at a lot of no shows, it wasnt OUR fault.
The farmer said if it was load, the local ones would blow, so must be a fault on someone's gear.
Also reckoned it was someone who arrived at about 8pm.

Exactly.
Although each hookup had a 6A in, whats the betting that the main trip was also 6A.
Lets face it, most of us were using a few hundred milliamps to power a fridge/coolbox

Shows what little he knows, the feeds had ELCB's and MCB's....any fault should take out those if it was installed correctly....

Correctly connected, should pop the nearest trip, not main ones.

-
Yes, its the hats that drew my attention, thought ehh up, be some antics later with that hen party!
-
I did notice your hats, thought it was a private party though! Think the lack of meega confused us!

So that big black 4x4 was really an Omega with a fancy body kit then ??? ;D ;D
I never realised you were part of the group either !
As a matter of interest .. down at the "pikey van" area, the consensus - including the vans who were not part of OOF - was that the Dutch van was using a large number of leccy devices, and they were being held responsible for the leccy tripping off at our end... perhaps they also took your end down at the same time ?? Depends how the site is wired I guess.
Anyway ... many thanks to Chopsdad for the organisation and to everyone for the friendship ... Even SWTSMBO enjoyed it and is looking forward to Newent
:y :y :y :y

Well will make the next one only missed this as am busy doing the kitchen up grrrrrr never ending !
We have a c/van & stayed near Whitby last year it was oh so wet a time I asked the site owners if we could leave early would we be charged etc noooo she says dont worry about it there are so many people ringing up & cancelling at the moment they will be empty if weather doesn't change ... now thats how it should be but some site owners just treat you like poo as they know there is some other mugs coming next week/month /year unless you can post a review on how bad it was !! Puts me off if it has bad reviews !

I'm tempted, Mark.
When we arrived lunchtime Friday, the daughter insisted I had booked for ourselves and 2 children, then couldn't tell whether we had paid a deposit and charged us another £20, £30 in all. (No receipt, of course). No complaints with the price, and the son-in-law showed us to our pitch and was most helpful and friendly. I hate to imagine what the poor sod puts up with from the maternal side of the family.
For some lucky reason, most of the flak by-passed us on the caravan field, but Chopsdad and Andy B were obviously in the firing line at times. None of it spoiled a great weekend however.
I did wake up on Saturday morning determined to lodge a very serious complaint about the noise made by Entwood and Chris, and Andy B and Annette, in Andy's awning until I remembered that we had also been there throughout the session. A most enjoyable start to the weekend.
Many thanks to Chopsdad for organising everything. If you didn't get there you missed a lot of fun.
Thanks also to Marks DTM and The Boy for work on my car and keys. All I asked for was Mark's confirmation of my 2.6l oil stem leak, but ended up getting Tech 2 climate control update and a key fob soldering repair carried out in Entwood's caravan. These guys are incredibly generous with their time and expertise, and I'm very grateful. The beers I gave them certainly wasn't sufficient recompense for their help, but they won't accept anything more on these social occasions. I think we should all insist on something more substantial for them in the future, but I'm probably banging my head against a brick wall.
It was great to meet friends old and new and Newent is now on our 'must do' list.
Bill.

Looking further down the reviews it's obvious they cram as many visitors in as possible as a matter of habit. Probably contravening all H&S and Planning requirements. And one review in August 2005 states they were told it was only their second season, whereas we spoke to a caravanner, (the one James was squeezed alongside, as it happens), who have been going there for 20 years. You wouldn't know what to believe from these people.
-
It must have been that time of the month, anyway I feel sorry for her husband, he was nice bloke :y..........that aside and on a serious note the campsite is very good, However, the campsite owner's don't appear to appreciate groups of folk like us. And they did'nt put us where they had said or where we had expected to be on the site, so a bit of a sham in that respect. As if they had got it right and we were grouped properly then Linda, would'nt have cause to have complained on Saturday afternoon, so Linda, if you read this, you only have yourself to blame :y

just been reading all about the weekend very eventful I wish I had been there but actually I was !!!!
you see I was stopping up with in laws just outside Keswick (opp thirmemere lake)
Sat night been to pictures in Keswick and took wrong turn from stone circle ended up on a66 to penrith so I was trying to get back on track via Threlked and remembered that bro in law and me had stayed in a cottage 20 years ago and decided to look for it.
Well we found it and at same time I noticed across from cottage there was agroup of tents in field so being nosy I went to investigate My other half was stressing saying it may be private but I carried on through gate at this point a large group of campers suddenly turned around and started staring at us.
I distinctly felt uncomfortable thinking may be she was right and it was some special meeting!!!!
any way I decided to carry on pretending I knew where I was going, I then noticed an omega and then another and then noticed a web site sticker in rear window of another.
It was then it twigged exactly what was going on
I stopped to ask someone but unfortunately he was not a member but he confirmed what I thought was a meeting.
I desparetly wanted to go around again to chat but I was over ruled by my wife and in laws because they knew once I got out of car I would be ages and they were tired and wanted to get back to caravan.
I really wanted to see you and wished I had dropped them off and come back.
I will have to know when next meet is on and come along
especially after reading the adventures you get up to
-

Blimey good job you got there before they donned the pointy hats & lit the crosses, on a more serious note, it's lucky I didn't go cause you can take me somewhere twice, the first time then back to appologise :-/

Hi Arpy, you should have got out, nice looking car you have there!
-
Hi Arpy,
Big opportunity missed, Arpy! You'd have been made more than welcome, and your family.
As a matter of interest, did the 'non-member' you spoke to show any signs of being upset by our presence? Nobody found anyone on the site who objected.
-
Hi shyboy and jim bob
sorry it has took so long to get back to you
Yes I did feel awful about driving off but I knew bro in law was whinging in back of car (hes not in to cars), thinking about it later I should have dropped them off and come back for an hour.
any way the couple I spoke to seemed very nice and didnt seem to be bothered at all and they were just around the corner from your tents.
In fact it seemed like they would liked to joined you!!!
you must let me know when next meeting is
cheers
Arpy
-
I wanted to go but unfortunately my financies just did not let me even with a very kind offer of transportation assistance by James & Maria, which was greatly appreciated :-* :-* :y.
However, I wish I had after reading all on this thread! I tell you what if I had been there, teaming up with LJay and basing it on what has been stated, we all would have been banned much earlier once I started. I cannot stand, as a professional in these matters, bad Customer Care practice and inefficient business administration; anyone who gives that to me (many have tried!) end up feeling my wroth and paying for it!! >:( >:( >:( >:(
All the best on a) making what you found very public &
b) finding somewhere else that appreciates you and your business - the bottom line of business is profit, and by the sounds of it Linda is one hell of a stupid woman as she is detirmined to turn-away future trade, the opposite to which you endevour to accomplish in business, and therefore cut future profit pontential! :o :o :o :o :o
PS She never actually took a deposit off me when I booked (big mistake yet again!) and just said they would take it once there. However I cancelled the booking 3 weeks before the event. ;)
-
Leaving aside Linda's attitude to us as she was storming over towards our 'van to stop us from stealing more of her electric ::) it was her daughter(-n-law) that Donald Ducked it all up in the first place. It was Miss Happy that ignored the arrangement that Linda & Chopsdad had made regard us using the rally field. I think that if we'd have been together, as originally planned, things would have been better all round.
