Right all ive been having a wee problem with my Senny backfiring into the inlet manifold.
The timing is spot on all the leads, coil, plugs etc replaced but it stills does it.
Its a 1986 3.0 cdi
Im thinking along the lines of the valves and valve seats could be burnt out.
It came out of the factory as a unleaded (2 star) engine.
Any suggestions :-\ :-\

Check for play on distributor arm, also rotor arm,and check dizzy cap, also efi ecu may be faulty.
-
Timing chain slipped?
Leaking injector?
-
Iirc there was a plug you could swap around to use either unleaded or 4* on the passenger side near shock mount.
-
Check leads in correct order on dizzy, check dizzy as they do wear out, there is a known fault with those distributor's.
I would post the fault on abs,as might be a member who can help.

The ron plug. Thought it was on drivers side, green coloured, with 95' stamped in white letters, and you just un plug it and turned it over...

Been a while since ive been under the bonnet of a senator, that was 15 yrs ago lol
-
Pretty sure my 89 Senator 12 valve didn't have the 'ron plug' :-\
If you think burnt out valves, how about a compression test?
I'd doubt timing chain issues, having a duplex chain, they're usually bullet proof
It's been a very loooong time since I've been under the bonnet of a 12v Senny too

Cheers for the replies guys.
I never thought about the Dizzy being worn/loose.
All the leads are bosch and the plugs NGK.
I would ask on ABS (been a member for 10 years) but I can't remember my password or user i.d lol.
This engine doesn't have the ron plug and as ive found out getting parts is a pain in the arse because the 1986 senny A was made up with parts from GM/OPEL & VAUXHAL.
The car goes great it's more so noticeable when moving of from a standing start.
I replace the fuel pump.
The next step will be a compression test :y

Hi there i love the senator I havnt seen one for years ....
Me neither, though my daughter sent me a picture of a civvy L reg Senator she was sat behind at the traffic lights a few weeks ago

Whats the symptoms of a back fire? presumably loud bangs coming from tut inlet manifold? ive never heard of this before your thread :-[
-
Lean running can cause backfiring too. :y
-
Inlet or exhaust air leak?

It back fires on the inlet side (in the manifold)

Was the reg L464 by any chance. It may be my one.

You say timing is spot on. I just mention that on my last 24 valve performance was getting worse over months, I finally traced the fault to the crank sensor reluctor ring having moved on the crankshaft. On the Senator the reluctor ring is on the end of the crankshaft, sharing a Woodruff key with the cam chain sprocket and I think the oil pump gear. Anyway. what happened was that someone had changed the cam chain, damaged the Woodruff key so that the reluctor ring, on the outer ring could move, and was doing so. Sadly, I failed to remove the nut, despite using heat and a large impact wrench, so scrapped the car.
You car is a 12 valve, so the duplex chain presumably has not been touched.

had to sort a carlton 12v few years ago, sounded like a bag of spanners, backfiring up the inlet, ran but only just, anyway after a fairly involved few hours, found the timing chain guide had broken, allowing timing to fluctuate, this allowed the hydraulic tensioner to expand to far as it tried to compensate,so oil pressure was low, polished the crank new big ends and mains i could get to :-X new tensioner, broken part was in the sump,it had just snapped, mileage was 86k?

No sorry. This was L910 XPF There can't be too many left on the road, especially as a daily runner.
