Title: 2.5td elite gutless?
Post by: omegaelitetd on 30 May 2015, 16:18:12
hi,
a few months ago, i saved a w-reg omega 2.5td elite from scrap, as the viscous fan had snapped off, blowing the rad and then the headgasket.

anyway, ive since had the headgasket replaced, new rad etc all fitted, and this is the first time ive had it on the road.

it feels like a gutless old boat tbh, even with my foot welded to the floor it still doesnt go brilliantly. i cant feel a turbo kick in, but i can hear it working if that makes sense? had a mechanic check, theres no airleaks that he can find, no warning lights on etc, no black smoke or anything.

i wasnt expecting a rocketship but i dont like cars i have to thrash the hell out of and atm this is one.

are 2.5td's like this? as ive never had one before? if not, is there anything that could be wrong?

many thanks!

The donkey underneath your bonnet was detuned by BMW before they let Vauxhall use it so it is rather lethargic to be honest with a autobox.
They do need very regular oil changes (every 3000 mile mark is a good starting point)
You can chip the ecu to give you a lot more useable power but due to the increase in torque, you would be highly advised to upgrade the gearbox from the AR25 which is fitted to the AR35 before you do.
The manual versions are a lot better both in economy and driveability.

I'm sure a member who is more experienced in the dark art of tractor engines will be along over the weekend to give you some better advise but in my opinion, the first port of call is a full oil and filter change followed by a good thrash  :y :y

Have you replaced the air and fuel filters? If not I would do so, and when changing the fuel filter, before reconnecting the fuel feed, fill it with Diesel Magic using SWMBO's gravy syringe ( ::)) or similar, then report back after thrashing. Mine went quite well before it was chipped, and even better afterwards, but the injectors need to be clean, and oil and filter change every 3k as advised above. :y

hi,
thanks for replies.
mines a manual not auto so thankfully i dont need to change the gearboxes.

i was planning on chipping it, but wanted to make sure before hand that there wasnt a fault with mine before i went ahead and had it chipped.

the black airbox was cracked on mine (the one that reads turbo diesel) ive since replaced it and thats improved it but still sluggish and i still cant feel a turbo kick in, is this normal on these as ive never had one before.

havent serviced it yet, on my next to do list.

thanks.

A good service, a can of diesel magic (straight into fuel filter, not into tank as the instructions suggest), remove the viscous (permanently) and a good Italian tune up can help.  But in standard form, its the least powerful of all the Omegas, with the exception of the uncommon 2.0DTi.  And the autobox doesn't help.

There are plenty of performance chips available, but be aware most of the egay type ones are shite.  But then the good chips will wreck the AR25 in no time (I think Omegatoy hold the record of less than 100 miles). Fit an AR35, or better still, manual conversion.

I miss my old TD Elite, it was a lovely motor.

Somebody not quite awake yet?

Chip it as it was born to drive like a slug ;)
As others said the engine was down rated... Oh the p38 range rover is just as bad hence I got rid and went back to a disco 1  300tdi :y

Having owned one I can say there should be a bit of a kick, nothing compared to my mates old Seat 90s with the 1.9TD, which was the fastest car in the entire world (you had to experience how he drove it to appreciate how true that statement is) but there's that sensation that suddenly there's about 50% more power on the Omega Turbo Weasels

As per the above suggestions, get it driven, and diesel magic etc. but be a shame to chip a motor that's actually really down on power for some other reason. Just like painting ver the cracks, so to speak. If at all poss get another TD owner nearby to have a drive of it.

They're pretty sturdy things, be worth trying a couple of rough, unofficial 0-60 times on appropriate roads? From memory you should be hovering about 10 seconds to 100kph  :y

Nah, nearer 11, possibly more. Slowest of the lot in standard form.  Chipped (with a good chip) it can keep a 2.5 petrol honest. Apparently. As I wouldn't condone such matters, obviously...

You can't be that far from Brackley, so get TB to give it a test drive, or perhaps not. :-X

I would never describe them as gutless, was the timing checked after re-assembly to make sure the chains had not jumped?

The Turbo setup is very simple and self contained so no ECU control, are all the inlet pipes connected up, does it go any better with the MAF disconnected (it only acts as a smog control device on this power unit)

Guess it depends on expectations.  I thought my old tractor was gutless until that day we fitted that present from Terry the chip man, if you recall.

I had such a grin on my face all the way home, and shagged the rear tyres (followed by the AR25 a few days later  :-[)

It shows how I drive then, as it was chipped for a year before I upgraded the box. ???  Oooops, mistake, just checked and I had removed the chip until the box was changed, then refitted. :-[
