Been using Win10 now for while as a Dual Boot with Win7 on the lappy, (Beta Obviously), whilst running Win7 today in normal mode, noticed an Win10 Icon notification appeared to have installed itself, upon clicking, it verified my free upgrade to Win10 full version when its ready.
Anyone else got this, I know its free anyway, but was trying to ascertain whether this is coming up on all normal Win7 Machines now, or whether its because Im using a Win10 Beta?
Also strange as Im using Win7 Ultimate, and my understanding Ultimate or Business Users wouldn't qualify for an unpaid Win10 Upgrade.
Also for info, apparently, Win10 will be the last Windows Release Platform, it will just be upgraded in time, so if thats the case, cant help thinking of us in the Year 2025 running Win10 with Service Pack 253 Installed, God thats gonna run like a pig.

I find it an interesting parallel how software vs the automotive, how cars with long production runs which are incrementally improved are noted as being some of the finest ever made, whereas the same but in reverse applies for an OS. The older, the more add-ons, the more bloated and the slower it gets.
Without teaching all on here to suck eggs the obvious candidates like the original 911, Land Rover/Defender, Lotus/Caterham/ 7, original Mini, Beetle and so on...
I was surprised to learn this odd approach ot 'no new Windows after 10' strategy, too, surely there's a massive chink in Microsoft's armour for, in maybe 4 years time, for some relative nobody to introduce and OS which has all the advantages of 10, but will do it a bit slicker and cheaper. I'm thinking of what Chrome has done to the dominance of Explorer users in the last few years. Hmm... :-\

Think MS kind of shoot themselves in the foot with Win8 on the Computer front and didn't help themselves when they took over Nokia Mobile and insisted everything should be Win Mobile, and then pissed around with Win7, 8 and 8.1 mobile Apps, or more to the point lake of them.
All very well trying a backward step with Win10, same platform for PC's, Laptops, Tablets and Phones, but they've missed the boat, unless they've got something clever up there sleeves in the near future and can address the Apps Issue to name a few, the Market share has already decided on IOS and Android for portable Toys.
Sony Betamax vs JVC VHS springs to mind here, at least Sony saw what was happening and soon started banging out VHS Machines rather than drown in a sinking ship.

ive just got the notification too....see what it like....prob a load of sherbert like windows 8

I have it too give it a try for free is always good

Dear Microsoft,
Good luck getting me to change from Windows 3.1.1 :y

Not sure any of the three highlighted are great examples, Land Rover/Defender was not developed and went on many backward steps in recent years but could have been truly superb if improved over time, it only continued as there was no competiion. Mini is similar, brilliant when launched, ten years later average, a further ten years later true shocking and when finally pensioned, an embarrassment, a classic symbol of why we don't have a UK owned company producing volume cars.
The Beetle was only what it was as it became (for some rather weird reason) an iconic car, again, not developed in anger.
-
Fair enough. I suppose I'm looking at 'great cars' of which I hope there'd be no doubt over anything on that list. As a general rule a system technology, vehicle, vessel mechanism, which is improved fractionally over a long time often prevails vs the 'bin that, it's old. new is better' methodology. Interesting that doesn't particularly apply with OSs, and the 'whitewash and start again' approach seems to be the way to go with most computing.
Ok, without dragging this off topic - anyone's suggestions for examples of an incrementally improved design over a long lifespan being a big seller/greatly admired/loved. :)

No matter how disastrous a software project has become, it's almost never the right decision to "bin it and start again" and no matter how radically the external appearance of recent windows versions has changed, be sure that the underlying code is very much just incrementally improved, where it's changed at all - much more so than in vehicle design.
I say almost because, if you go back far enough, you hit Windows 3.11 / 95 / 98 / ME, where even microsoft eventually realised that the only sensible thing to do is kill it with fire. ;D

Yeah i got the notification today as well. Im running a cough cough version of win 7 ultimate.

All my brother's stock and till software is built on VB6, pre millennium. Getting a machine to run the VB6 IDE is getting difficult, but the bloody project will not convert to .NET
I really don't want to start again, but....
As to OS, Windows 10 isn't that different to NT3.1, launched in 91, although the user interface has been through a few iterations

VM and thin client? With the processing power available these days it could be an option but I guess it depends on the number of tills and how deep your his pockets are :-\

No, the compiled code runs fine on Win7 (and Win8, but he hasn't got that). And the previous Win10 preview (not tried the current one, CBA to rebuild the PC again).
Its the VB IDE that's the problem. The IDE is too buggy in Win7, so have to maintain a XP VM just for this :(

My understanding is that the reason that Win 10 is being called the last Windows OS is that during Win 10's life they are going over to a totally based cloud system and like Photoshop you will have to rent it with a monthly fee but updates / upgrades will happen automatically.
This is great for shareholders where you will pay £100's to £1000's in rent every year, but not for people like me who refuse to rent / lease things where it normally works out far more expensive than buying.

Its not really possible to move the client into the cloud (you can move their desktop experience though), as the thin clients required to run at a decent speed aren't that "thin". The thin client OS needs maintenance.
I suspect MS will be going more towards a constant update system for the client/desktop, as has been trialled with Win8 with the 2 big feature updates, including Win8.1.

Yes, tell me about it. I inherited a project in VB6 a couple of years ago (never actually developed anything in VB6 myself). Every time I think it's finally dead, some daft git quotes a customer for it. ::)
This has a snowball's chance in hell of even running under Windows 7, since it makes extensive use of bits of the disk and registry that it shouldn't. :(

Just noticed that I have got the notification too :y

In my bro's case, I have a GPO frig the registry to overcome the Vista+ enforcements of abusing the registry :-[

Same here on a Toshiba laptop on Win 7 roughly 4 years old.

Yep I've got that showing at the bottom of my laptop screen, but as all this computer talk is just so much gibberish to me all I want to know is if I click on it does it cost me money?Or what happens if I don't click on it?I'm told at present I'm on windows 7 whatever that means!
-
I haven't had my PC on today. Shall I boot it up so that I can get excited too.

I'm stuck using 7 Ultimate because my printer / scanner / ect won't run on Win 8 :(
Can I take it that it will be the same with this new supper dooper Windows 10 :-\

Thats odd any driver that works on win 7 should run on win 8! what printer do you have?
-
I've got it on mine aswell, bit strange it's a free upgrade unless were the test dummies!! :D
-
I've got it on mine as well regarding the printer go to printer web site to find windows drivers for all version of windows

Ok....let me be the first noob to ask this...
I have had the notification from Microsoft, and reserved my upgrade. When this happens, how does it work. What about all my e-mails, documents, and especially stuff that relies on registry entries. Will it just overwrite certain bits, and carry on as normal or will I have to load programmes back in.
Please let the answers soothe my troubled brow. ;)
Oh...and I have 3 computers running 7, will I get notification for all three ?
-

Win10, when its officially released (supposedly later this year, more like early 2016), should be similar to a mix of Win7 and 8 but with the missing Start Menu back again, so you should be able to run all the Windows Programs kicking around plus all the Win Apps from the MS Store.
Having said that Ive been running Win10 for a while now (Beta Test Version) and whilst its pretty good, its still very buggy, especially on existing Drivers etc, a long way to go yet, before its finished, but there under pressure to get it released in some form or another. ::)

Will be a totally fresh Install that will overwrite your existing OS and keep (Try to) your existing programs , probably with a Roll Back feature to your existing OS (there be silly not to put that in).
Personally, assuming you have enough Disk Space kicking around, I would backup / clone your existing OS Drive(s) and run with a Dual Boot for a while until you feel comfortable with it. Then do a completely fresh Install of 10 (using your existing Win10 Licence, if needed) on a new drive and reinstall your programs and data.
And yes, Win10 will be available for all your OS's running 7,8 and 8.1 that are capable of running Win10, Hardware dependent, so will exclude Win7 Mobile, Win8 RTM etc.

Thanks, zirk, appreciated :y

I asked the question, because all my computers came with Windows on, but only one, the main one, has had a notification.
I did not know whether it went like only one to an account.
Another stupid question...I have a windows phone with 8 on it...will that upgrade, or is that a totally separate issue.
Sorry for lack of knowledge :-[

Should do, if its full 8 and subject to Hardware again, have you tried updating the phone to 8.1?
-
It is 8.1 so I have been told :y

Explain please Chris :-[ :-[ :-\
Personally, assuming you have enough Disk Space kicking around, I would backup / clone your existing OS Drive(s) and run with a Dual Boot for a while until you feel comfortable with it.
-
How I read it Rob is, ...If you have another disk large enough to clone your existing disk onto, you can do this using a small piece of software. I have it, but at the moment can't think of its name.
So you now have two identical disks.
When the time comes....update one, leave the other as is. When you boot up after the update, you will then have the choice of booting into the new upgraded drive, or the 'cloned' original one. That's called dual boot.
Sometimes the computer does not recognise a second drive to boot, so I use a piece of software called EasyBCD which 'installs' the drives in the Disk Manager, and you can then name which disk you want as default boot, and which one as secondary.
I have this now, and on boot up, I have two choices....if I don't press the down arrow to pick the secondary disk, the computer automatically boots to the default disk you have set.
I hope that makes sense, mate, after all that typing ;D

I just got thenotification too

Why would you want to disable it? You have to register your interest, or nowt will happen. Once you do register your interest, you will receive an email with all the FAQs. You can decide not to go ahead if you don't want to.
What's not to want? If you haven't got a compatible device, you won't get the icon. And you must have windows update enabled.
Rollout from July 29th.
You girls make such a fuss over nothing. ;D
-
Anyone running Windows Media Center will lose that during the upgrade.
Oddly no silly notifications for me. Advantage of WSUS :D.
The upgrade will be free to all existing Windows users for the first year. TBH, if your PC came with Win7, its probably due a trip to landfill, so don't get too creamed up over this "free" upgrade
-
For those who think that once they have it, they will have to part with money 12 months later....not true
'The upgrade will only be free in the first 12 months after release and will last for the "supported lifetime of the device." Microsoft said the new OS will run on PCs, tablets, phones, and a new device to be announced later today' :y.

This upgrade/reservation process is for PCs and tablets only. For most Windows 8.1 Phone devices, the Windows 10 upgrade will be made available through the OEM, mobile operator or carrier. Stay tuned for more information later this year.

My printer and flat bed scanner was designed to work on XP / |Vista Chris.
Managed to find win 7 updates for both but lost some of the facilities with both the printer and scanner :(
Also I tend to go kill lots of Serbians/ Yugoslavians and North Koreans on a flight simulator game which i've had for years but only just learning to use the aircraft cockpit in higher skill levels :-[
Found lots of updates for the flight sim on the t'nternet but it has never run as smooth as when running XP / Vista.
Well Lightning's never had touch screen MFD's or even a radar which worked properly and the early Tornado's was very temperamental so sat in the back with the power on and having a play when the jockeys wasn't about was frowned on ;D
It might probably be human interface error on my part then :-[

When you click on the icon in the taskbar, it should bring up a window asking you to register your interest.
