As above.
I think ive now used most car mechanics tools, and sampled some of the more specialist tools.
But out of my tool kit I'd say by far it's a choice between:
Makita 18v cordless impact gun. This thing usually blasts any nut loose, takes ten mins to charge from empty and is light enough to use. I've also dropped it from about 4ft on a number of occasions and it's been fine. Love it.
Secondly. . . My 600mm 1/2" sealey ratchet. Flex head with a stop. It's just so nice. So much leverage. Really nice smooth ratchet.
Finally. My halfords 1/4" ratchet and deep socket combo. This just feels nice especially when working on pollen filter housing bolts. Can't tell u why but love it.
What's yours?

Orgasma gizmo! (My hitachi cordless impact wrench)

Anyone with a non genital comment lol
-
Nope ;D
-
Telescopic magnet thing :)
-
So many choices!
Vacuum pressure bleeder. It means billy no mates here can bleed clutch/brakes/diesel lines.
Britool 3/8 swivel head ratchet. It's a pleasure to use, when the swivel isn't nipping your fingers.
3rd is more difficult, I love my shallow/deep 6pt Snap On sockets, but I'm currently trialling a impact gun I like and I've just bought some of those fancy ass 'Multi-Drive' sockets, but I've yet to use them in anger.
-
My torque wrench. It cost a bomb in the early seventies and lives in the car with a wheel nut socket on it.
One of my pet hates are overtightened wheel nuts.
-
I don't think it fair that I call him a 'tool' but 1 of my sons is my favourite :)

Recently bought one of these. http://www.seeedstudio.com/depot/DSO-Quad-Aluminium-Alloy-Silver-p-1033.html (http://www.seeedstudio.com/depot/DSO-Quad-Aluminium-Alloy-Silver-p-1033.html) 8)
So that's.. erm.. About 9 oscilloscopes, I think. :-[

Telescopic magnet thing :)
They're even better with a light on the end!

Should of known Kev. Should of known. ;) ;D
Although, I did forget my Plasma cutter. How, I don't really know. :-\

It was about £4 from a market stall.
Currently, my favourite tool is the bigger lathe I bought last year to replace a mini-lathe.
But the plasma cutter is a real time saver for big sheetmetal jobs combined with a decent MIG welder. There is also something particularly satisfying about doing a good aluminium weld, although I don't manage it very often.

Hammer and mole grips.

Hammer and mole grips.
Agreed.
This implement should not be used on genitalia.
-
Toss up between a little teeny blue flat screwdriver or my 10mm Halfords flexi ratchet spanner, i'm easily pleased obviously !
-
We are all picking clever/expensive tools. I think we are overlooking the really useful tools...
Hammer
WD40 (Or better)
Cable ties
Gaffer tape
Gloves
If you need more tools in your box, then buy multiples of the above list. :y
-
Flexible magnet thingy, so useful for getting those dropped screws and bolts that you can't reach, not to mention fishing the grub screw I dropped down the timing chain case on my Senator :-X
-
Have I stumbled onto Mumsnet? The only acceptable answer is "hammer". Unless its "big hammer".

You need to broaden your experience.
I'll see your "big hammer" and raise you a 12" petrol disc cutter.
-
I'm not surprised by Stemos comment, but I am surprised thatKevin didn't suggest his light bulb changer :-\
-
A heavy duty CK flat bladed screwdriver with a hex area on the shaft so you can put some real leverage on those rusted screws that has taken in its stride many, many years of abuse and is none the worse for it. :) :) :) :) Abused for everything from a heavy duty lever to a small cold chisel. :o :o :o :o
When I was an apprentice if you won one of the annual Apprentice prizes, you got a voucher to spend at our local quality engineering tool shop. So the screwdriver didn't even cost me anything. :y :y :y :y

9 scopes, kev ??? Lol

;D I haven't even mentioned the Makita impact driver yet ??? ;D

I have a Dewalt ;)
Nice try Webby! Try harder :P ;D
-
Nearly ;D :D
-
I could mention my
DeWalt upmarket black and decker orgasma gizmo impact wrench, or the impact driver, or the plasma cutter, or Sammy.
But overall, I think my favourite tool that can be used on those awkward Omega bits is a tunnie ;D
-
;D

The best tool on here is you Webby!

I'll take that as a compliment :y

They light up a wide area, I like a beam of light.
-
I must have about 18 torches now , bit of a collector :-[
-
I got my eye on a Draper rechargeable torch. I keep dropping mine and the internal screw locators break off. There's only one left :'(

Using a telescopic radio aerial with a magnet on the end to retrieve metal objects from confined spaces isn't really a recipe for durability. The expensive ones aren't much better than the cheapies. I consider them consumables, and bin them when broken.
This is not true of LED torches; I find the cheap ones(and I still have a few left that were 10 for £15) to be bright but have no spread or reach. They are worth spending a few quid on.
