Title: Coolant Flush
Post by: mka306 on 10 June 2015, 19:03:23
Hi guys, is there a recommended coolant flush to use for cleaning out the cooling system after replacing the Oil Cooler, a lot of the stuff for sale states you must poor it into the radiator but I need to clean the expansion tank ect so would want something I can poor into there?

As always your superior knowledge is very much appreciated :y

Firstly, do about 20+ flushes with water.

Remove bits you can, flush under tap.

Good luck!

Do you need a coolant flush then or is it just water?

I just run the hose with the engine running keeping a beady eye on the level.

Oh, sorry...didn't read the piece about oil cooler failure.

I simply used washing powder.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll get some dishwasher liquid and flush it out a good 30+ times no doubt and hopefully it will clean out the gunky oil in the pipes.

Not dishwaher fluid, dishwasher tablets... Specifically the ones Aaron used as they work :y

Screenwash worked quite well as well ::), but I'd flush the bulk out with water before moving on to chemical options, so the chemical options stand a chance of working.

omegatoy used to suggest cap of bleach, with engine on idle up to temp. Helps break the oil down

Better to use dishwasher tablets. Put 2 or 3 in a small bucket with warm water & disolve them . Then add this to the header tank  filling the system as best you can ,  let it soak overnight , then flush out with hose . You will need to do this a lot of times .  Don't know about dishwasher liquid   . . . but I do know that dishwasher tablets work . HTH  :y

I think we went through half a pack of .. I think they were Finish Powerball.

Fed a few into the header tank, ran till hot, span the cap off (dodge the volcano of sludgy water), drain, fill, repeat..

At £15-£16 a pop I think I'll give the dishwasher tabs a go, lol.

Make sure the last few flushes are plain water followed by a final fill of proper mix coolant; the tabs are corrosive so you don't want any left in there undiluted.

For the final round of flushing I actually left plain water (sshh, I know) in there for a week and ran it to work & back before dropping the lot and filling with coolant.

Thanks for the advice and not a bad idea with the water, ill be flushing the living he'll out of it so hopefully clear the system of all dishwasher liquid/tabs.

Just had a bit of a kick in the teeth, whilst fitting one of the hollow bolts that holds the oil pipe into the top of the oil cooler it decided to brake in half, 30nm just killed it. Just waiting for a second hand bolt to arrive so I can complete the job.
