Title: Good Result
Post by: Rods2 on 12 June 2015, 14:57:18
I have a relatively cheap Sony music centre for playing CDs in my study / office. It is about 10 years old and the CD player has started playing up. The predecessor was also a Sony and that one only lasted about about 5 years before the CD player packed up and at that time I couldn't locate the spares to repair it and a repair at the local Sony centre was not cost effective. However, I kept it as the amplifier was useful.

Last weekend I took the old unit to pieces and and found I could get a replacement laser unit for less that £6 and a replacement laser unit cable for £2.99 on EBay. So I ordered those on Monday, they arrived Wednesday and last night I replaced the laser unit and cable and now have one working CD unit, and I got change from £9 for the cost of the repair. :) :) :) :)

Next is to repeat the operation on my newer Sony unit and at that price I will keep a spare set for each of them, so when they eventually go again as I suspect spares will be more difficult to obtain by then, where most people these days prefer to rent or lease their music with MP3 files, rather than owning it with CDs.

Good stuff! I've got a mini-system, had it over 15 years, as well as various other Sony stuff, nice to see a simple repair has made this work 100% again!

TB will be along in a min to tell you how much he likes Sony  :y

Ok, time for a plaudit for the British - Quad 33/303 preamp and main and Tannoy York speakers, all 43 years old and sound as new!
The prices hurt me at the time, but nowhere near as much as to buy them today; IF you could.....

Ron.

Iv just mothballed a Technics mini system in favour of a Denon all in 1 black box thing.... not a patch on the Technics system TBH...

I used to swear by Akai stacking systems but someone who was down on their luck, decided they would make better use of it and removed it via the rear window of my parents house.... never bought another expensive system since... they took all my Abba CD's too....

I'm playing with a Quad 405 at the moment. The electronics isn't too expensive second hand, but I suspect you'd pay "quite a lot" for the Tannoys these days. :y
