Hi all your thoughts please. The wife and i have been offered a new job,we live in hartlepool TS26.The job is in NE23 so 39.7 miles there the same back.I have a 3.0 liter omega saloon, A19 all the way so 70mph.What do you think i will get MPG,and how much in petrol per day.As i am going to see the company owner tomorrow. And discuss hourly rates of pay and i want to,incorporate travel costs.Any advice welcomed.Dean. :y

Hazard a guess and say around £10 per day in fuel?
-
Why not just allow the standard mileage rate of 45p / mile? Fuel I would think be costing you 20p / mile but the rest will account for depreciation and other costs.

£10 wouldn't quite buy you 2 gallons of petrol but even if it did, a 3.0 Elite won't do 40 mpg ;) ;)

SWMBO now gets 67p using her own car ;) thats why the fuelled by her lease car went back ;) ;)
The 67p is for any car , wether you are using a corsa or an omega ::)
She now has a £400 old Astra sorry a nice clean shiney oldish £400 Astra ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hi Andy, what would you say.The car will do MPG and how much would you budget mate.Dean.Just to add its auto, and he is not offering a mileage allowance,i just want to add the mileage costs. On to the hourly rate,as he said he wants us and the pay rate is negotiable. :y

Hi Andy, what would you say.The car will do MPG and how much would you budget mate.Dean.
Though you might see low 30s mpg on the motorway, you've to get to & from it. Average I'd say high 20s, which would be about 2 & half gallons at around £5.50 per gall (using £1.20 per litre) equals £13.75 a day

Thanks Andy, that's a lot of petrol. He is saying he will negotiate between £7&£10 an hour for each of us x38 hrs.So it looks like i will have to do some calculations,of witch i am not good. ;D.Dean :y
-
If you go middle ground on the wages and say £8.50 per hour then you'd get a gross of £323 each for 38hrs.petrol at £13.75 per day[assuming 38hrs over 5day week] would come in at £68.75 per week. That should give you a rough calculation as a start point if it's of any use to you.

My 3.2 manual costs about £12 a day for a 46 mile round trip...
But...
That's about 40% dual carriageway
A roundabout every mile on average
It has a 49" lightbar stuck in the airflow ::)
And I don't drive it particularly gently... :-X
-
Don't count just fuel, factor in work too. Those miles will mount up, so tyres, shocks, brake pads, oil ect will cost a bit too.
Best thing is pop everything in a spreadsheet, tyre cost, oil changes ect. Divide it by miles you do, that is your real cost. :y
-
The Omega costs 35ppmile to run allowing for 30k a year... iirc obviously that was paying over £1k a year for Taxi insurance... Tyres only cost 0.032ppm allowing £80 per tyre with a life of 10,000 miles... Oil is £12 every 5k, filter £3 at the same interval... Diy cars cost sod all to run in reality, the issue is that noone budgets for the repairs ::)
-
I'd be working on about £20 a day, I reckon.. allows you as low as 24mpg and if you're getting over that the rest can pay for the maintenance.

It's not petrol cost that would worry me, unless your working hours are Mid day to Mid night, or thereabouts it will take you hours just to get through the tunnel, or it did. I know there are 2 now, but I would seriously check out commuting times before agreeing to any new Job, or move again!................. Just my 2d worth............. ;) ;)
-
I think it would be an awful journey to do every day. ;D
You could by a second smaller car. The Ford Ka I used to have did 50mpg easy and the insurance is much less.

Which is why I don't use my R Class every day & use the Smart most days ...... 50ish mpg vs mid/high 20s mpg :y

Or go LPG?
My 2.2 did 27mpg on gas for last tank. I'd have to get 55mpg on diesel to get same cost per mile.
Apart from when it's dry, then I use the bike. 54mpg and skip all the traffic jams 8)

So Andy B and Tunnie, you have totally missed the point that I and Kate made, fuel is the least of his problems................. :D :D

I once commuted 150 miles a day, while saving up for my flat deposit.
Needs must to get the pennies in :y

Quite agree, but up here we tend not to commute so much, it's a nightmare, but must put this into some perspective, to anyone in the South East it is likely to be considered normal!!
I am looking for work at the moment, to subsidise my pension, 15 miles is the area I am looking at, no more, and seemingly lots of opportunities within this radius, loads more if I extend to 25 miles................. :D :D
-
A lad I works with works nights, lives near Waterloo qnd commutes to Gatwick...
By car :o
-
In my experience, ie, one that keeps an eye on the MPG of the cars I drive or driven, I would say Omega 3.0 Auto will do, if driven sensibly -
24 mpg pottering around town.
28 mpg running around country side.
33 mpg on a motorway cruise.

In my manual 2.5 V6 saloon I used to get 38mpg door to door for my commute from Nottingham to Coventry.

Thanks mate, but it was a wind up by the agency. They pressured the guy to interview us because of our skills, within the first 15min.It was obvious he wanted us but,not at the rates the agency had said they could get us.I am a bit pissed off to be honest, but we will just have to keep looking.

That is right mate,we moved up here with an electronics company. But there have been big management changes, and the new production manager. Was a self-abuser and we could not work for him any more.I have contacted all the electronic company's,that i know of up here. But as of yet no joy,so we may just have to move back down south. As there seams to be more opportunity's,its a bit of a pain but needs must.Dean.

Aw, come on, Dean. How can you not be happy in Hartlepool? ;D
