Title: Help wanted Urgent
Post by: Mr Gav on 27 June 2015, 12:30:42
i`ve removed the front wishbone bush (rear) but seems to be approximately 2mm smaller diameter than the GM ones I have got to replace them with  :-\

Is this right? I just can`t see the new bushes going in, I`ve tried to get them started with a press and a hammer and drift but it just doesn`t want to know.

Has anyone else come accross this with the aftermarket wishbones?

Obviously aftermarket makers are free to make their bushes as they see fit. Certainly GM and the Lemforder ones I've seen are the same size though.

How did you remove the old bush? Is the 'bone off the car? If you burnt or cut it out, you may have left some in place. :-\
If genuine GM, then they will fit in the correct place. :y

What make are the wishbones? I wasn't aware of any variation in the size of bush used (even among after market wishbones).

I am with Shakeng, I think you still need to remove the steel outer sleeve of your old bushes.

The steel outer sleeve is removed along with the bush, it came out ok using a metal tube slightly smaller than the sleeve but I could tell straight away that it wasn`t going to go in. I bought two cheapy wishbones from Euro Crap Parts, as it`s due the MOT this week and I didn`t have time to mess about.

I`ll take some photos tomorrow  :y

Not had any issues rebushing Atp supplied wishbones either...

Unfortunately it sounds like you have just wasted your money :-\

In which way Al? Buying new wishbone or buying the bushes?

Both... As having pressed the bushes out, you cannot either fit or return the new wishbones to ECP for a refund :-\

I think Mr Gav is saying that he has made an emergency purchase of a pair of wishbones to get him mobile again.

I read it as fitting new GM bushes to new cheapy wishbones :-\

Indeed.

There's is noting to say a cheap o after market copy will be the same in any dimension as the part it's "copied" from.

Ah ok... What make were the wishbones you are trying to refurbish?

No idea Al  ;D

I got them four years ago when money was tight, tbh they've lasted well, they've done about 30k and only the drivers dude bush has gone. I got them from an online Vauxhall parts place, don't even think I have the link anymore.

It seems very strange that the pattern 'bones fitted the car OK, and yet new OE bushes wont fit them. ??? ??? ???

I agree, and it wasn't what I expected, I know it needs to be a tight fit but I just can't see these going in.

Have you been given the correct bushes? :-\

Can you get a digital caliper reading, to confirm exact dimensions. Have to say mine stuffed in badly by hand, with no clear way they'd fit, only to find with the proper press they went in fine.

Not saying you're wrong at all, simply if you could get a digital caliper reading of the diameter of bush and hole, that would at least confirm to yourself and us that there's a definite size difference.

note: don't own a digital caliper myself, I went into an engineering shop a few months back and asked to borrow a brand new one to test 'how it felt to use', and what do you know, I just happened to have a bolt in my pocket (which I coincidentally needed measuring to a micron ;)). Bit cheeky, but ways and means, and they didn't mind  :)

Might be a bit difficult carrying a wishbone and bush in lol.

I did have a digital micrometer but not seen it in a while, not that it will matter now if the Pikey's have been round and took then off the lawn  ;D

You and me are different then, never had any difficulty in carrying an Omega wishbone. Simply undo my flies, and still leaves me two hands free to hold a pint of ale and the micrometer  ;) :D

I recently did what you are trying to do. ie. fit a set of GM bushes to cheap wishbones and I couldn't get the bushes to go in no matter what I tried.....  ::)

I eventually borrowed a bush press set from my friendly local garage and they went in fine.  :y

The bush press set was like this.

Cheers Ex Sir Tigger ( been a naughty boy recently  ::))I`ll have a look down that avenue, I tried a press albeit one not designed for bush pressing but the bush just wanted to slip one way or another. The car is MOT`d now so I have time on my side  :y
