Title: Advice on selling car
Post by: Lagondanet on 03 July 2015, 13:17:20
I need to sell my 1969 VW Beetle Cabrio.  What do you think would be the best way to do so and why?

Auto Trader, Ebay, Pistonheads, Auction......?

Your advice please.

I think I'd suggest PH or a proper classics auction over eBay, I'd probably put an ad on autotrader just because but I think classics are usually sold through more specialist sites.

The answer also depends on what it's worth; is it a £350 munter or a £10000 restored classic?

Hmmm... [commencement of advice from person who has no experience whatsoever of selling a Beetle Cabrio  :y]

1 is it a Karmann or a later/other conversion?
2 do you belong to a car club to do with said car?
3 if anything like OOF, then 2 may not be the place, as we've all got our cars, and don't need another, so to speak. In a way you're looking for that private individual who wants one, as opposed to a collector/enthusuast who knows every little thing to look for and really will only offer less than its value, as they may wish to break it/use it for other purposes/projects.
4 Whatever, you're ideally aiming to avoid selling to a dealer, due to the consequential lower price.

Autotrader gets the most press and to be fair, probably the most (serious buyer) views. Ebay always seems to offer lower prices, may be talking out my exhaust, but thats how its always seemed to me.

I'd say you really need that disposable income person who wants one, and ordinarily would walk upto a classic car dealer/specialist, and pick their car that way. Find that individual, and charge 2p less than the dealer would for your car, and you're getting plenty more than youd ever get selling to a dealer or similar. Personally I'd be looking at getting to some car shows. Make a For Sale sign, make sure all relevant documentation is there to be viewed, and let the people who love those cars (as that's why at a Car Show there in the first place) drool over your lovely motor and hopefully make an offer. Also saves that godawful waiting around for no-shows, tyre kickers etc.. Because they've come to you, you're not lifting a finger, you're just at a Show and enjoying the sunshine.
 :)

Thanks for the advice so far. All very interesting. Keep it coming.

(I have had a lot of cars in the last 45 years but never made a profit when selling any of them. Indeed the opposite.)

I am not a member of the VW Cabrio Club & it's not a £350 munter but not a pristine resto either!

I'm sure the VW festival has a For Sale section, its on at Harewood House in August. That would seem a good place. Its also a cracking weekend.

There's also a small one in Redcar next weekend - I haven't looked to see where you're based...

EBay classified ad.  Much cheaper than Autotrader and arguably you'll get better exposure. Don't forget Gumtree either, it's free and I quickly sold a car and a motorbike from it last year.  :y

Think there is a magazine called VW World-or something like that-where you could place an ad,they're usually free to private sellers with possibly the added bonus that they usually put same ad in other titles that the same publisher puts out.Downside I suppose is that apart from waiting a month or two for the ad to appear you would then get[as DBG suggests]the type of people who "know"everything about everything to do with your car.

You could try here... http://www.bugjam.co.uk/tickets.php
Not too far from where you are I think - take the car & slap a For Sale sign on it in the car park - you can see some racing too.

carandclassic.co.uk

Free and easy so nothing to lose by trying. Loads of weird and wonderful things on there (typically overpriced classics but they seem to move).

I have put the car with a local classic car dealer to sell and also posted elsewhere as suggested. My wife is sad to see her baby go. Thanks for your advice.
If anyone is interested I could post the dealer link here if permitted?

Nice looking car! And that's coming from someone who really dislikes beetles.

I would put in another vote for Car and Classic. My dad found his e-type through there (albeit at a reputable classic jag dealer).

When you said Beetle I assumed 911.

They are after all one and the same. :)

If not the Karman Ghia, I believe they needed the floor pan stiffening, I would be interested in either version. PM me with details. :y

Except the above will have the asthmatic and troublesome type 1 air cooled hitler special where as a 911 has the far improved van engine that is the type 4

??? I ran a '59 1172cc Beetle for 15 years and only had to replace 2 exhaust valves, and drove the car flat to the floor whenever possible. In my experience they were a superb engine. :y

I have rebuilt a few now and each one had shot mains and overheating issues.

That said they were 1.5's and 1 off 1.3 so slightly more stressed than the 29bhp from the 1.1.

The harsh reality is that they rely on the oil for the serious business of cooling the valves and the pistons etc and the type 1 oil setup is horrific (much better on the type 4) with there not even being an oil filter as standard!

There are a number of ways of improving things with a bit of work but, hard fact is that if you want more go, get rid of the type 1   :'(

On the same type, 1.1, an Aussie friend ran his for a year with the engine lid welded shut for a bet...he won! :y

The other beauty of the old beetles, (my son had one after me), was how easy it was to drop the engine, IIRC, two heater connections, choke, throttle cables, and four bolts to the gearbox housing, and possibly an electrical connection. About 45 minutes at a lazy pace, and easy to lift onto the bench. :y

The one i had about 45yrs ago was only a 6v system, was a bugger to start sometimes. The kids (three) used to fight each other to see which one could get into the well behind the rear seats ;D In the end they all got in. That was the heady days before seat belts and booster seats.

Yes mine was 6v, but always started well. Lights were like fireflies, esp. with the sloping headlamps. Loved that car, the TD is the only one I've owned longer. :y
