Title: Good Motoring start to the week NOT
Post by: Markie on 07 July 2008, 13:45:58
Got lots of car work on, and i dread to think how it will end up after this mornings escapades...

Jeep needed to go to a garage ( at mates rates for a CV joint as i had given up trying to fix it) It then needs MOT on Wednesday.

Anyway it went on Fire this morning en route  ;D Sticky caliper - no damage.

Tuesday sees swmbos new car head to the dealer to have a timing belt changed ( it requires front bumper and headlight out!!) and its 6k overdue. Then it needs MOT  :o

Got a call this morning to say garage have given up trying to take driveshaft / axel off the change CV joint  :( so no charge and subsequently now not being MOT`d This week.

So any one ever done a CV on 1997 Grand Cherokee?

And anyone any ideas of SWMBOS new car from the description of its complex timing belt change routine ??

bumper off implies rwd (accept audi), and it looks a bit crap for merc, so I'm going with crappy 1 series

hmmm, dont you have to remove the headlight and bumper from a clit to do the belt?

But surely she hasn't downsized to a clit?

A hub puller should have it off IME, although I have no idea what arrangement is on the Jeep. Bolt the puller on, tighten centre screw, tap centre screw with hammer, tighten a bit more, etc...

Make sure everything is doused in Plus Gas beforehand. If it won't play, leave it 24 hours after another dousing and try again...

Then start resorting to a little heat, sammy, angle grinder, Petrol and box of matches.

Cheers Kevin - we already spent 2 days on it, chisel, hammers, penetrating fluid, plus gas, blowtorch with very little movement. All the bolts are off but the hub actually seems corroded on  :o

The whole driveshaft needs to come off after the hub to slide the cv gaitor on from inside to the outside.

We gave up thinking that my local mechanic mate would have more success. Nope he aint got a clue....so were now going to have another crack at it with a hub puller  :-/

So the Jeep is still not allowing its hub to come off....

As for the Renault - its on its way back took 3 days to do a timing belt - had it confirmed independantly ( by a garage that wouldnt/ couldnt do it its a 6.1 hour job)

They broke the timing belt cover and wanted to charge for a new one. No Chance.

Then yesterday they said the aux belt tensioner was broken and it needed a new kit at £139....plus labour, managed to get it done for £49 after threatening them a few times....

So just in case anyone thought dealers were unfairly tarred with an incompetent label...... ::)

PMSL  No I think they are completely justified comments made by normal customers who dont think it is ok for garages to take the pi$$ by doing shoddy work and breaking parts and expecting the customer to pay for it.

Also they should warn of all possiblities to a customer in case they find worn tensioners.

Plus they also charge £40 to £60 an hour for the privalidge.

If you want customer service from a dealer buy a Lexus, although sell your internal organs for research before hand as they aint cheap.

I am informed that Jeeps a re swines to pull the hubs on.

The recommended method is to use a hydraulic puller, lots of plus gas and leave it over night.

I remember trying to get the rear hub off an XJ6. It didn't work with a normal puller, then I discovered they Loctited the dam thing onto the splines. Gave up  :-X :-X :-X

Oh and a nice surprise from Renault....Wifey been to pick up clitsport ( its called Rachel apparently.... bloody women) and the overall bill including aux belt, tensioners, and new timing cover was £30 less than the original basic quote for timing belt and tensioner kit only....

Car also washed and valeted and visual inspection carried out. Seems it needs new pads ( suspected that) rear tyres ( already ordered them) and has 1 weeping shock...

If i spend £500 putting this right, coupled with the belts its still on the road for £2.5k less than "list"  :-/

Thats not a hydraulic puller though..........which will apply in the order of 10 ton of continuous pressure!

I have an alternative though, Sammy sledge and Avril Angle Grinder ;D
I have sourced a replacement hub / driveshaft, as a last resort though.
