Title: Seems like a good idea
Post by: 78bex on 10 July 2015, 00:22:57
So in the US it looks as if dealers are compelled by law to cough up information regarding the cars repair history  :y

This is a step in the right direction, so what do we get in the UK to protect the buyer who`s about to hand over his hard earned money ???  Insurance cat rating on a V5 if you happen to request a car report or if the dealer is honest & tells you.

Don't think we need an equivalent to this in the UK, we already have consumer protection law that covers this. If omitting information would cause a customer to act differently (ie pay less for a damaged & repaired car).

Misleading Omissions (regulation 6)
Giving insufficient information about the product

Practices may also mislead by failing to give consumers the
information they need to make an informed choice (in relation
to a product). This occurs when practices:

• omit or hide material information, or provide it in an unclear, unintelligible, ambiguous or untimely manner,
and
• the average consumer takes, or is likely to take, a different decision as a result.

Admittedly our reg's only cover cars bought from traders. TBH though, (IMHO), someone buying a car for a meaningful amount of money (and by that I mean meaningful to them) privately would be foolish and naive to do so without an independent check on the vehicle's condition and history.
