Title: ECUs - what fits?
Post by: Diamond Black Geezer on 14 July 2015, 14:48:28
Spotted an ECU that could be had very cheaply, it states 2.5 V6 S-reg, now...

Daft Question 1: Will this fit mine? (mine being a pre-MFL, 1996) I know ABS ECUs are different between PFL and MFL, that's all.  :-\
Daft Question 2: Will I need a new plip/transponder for the car to work? Or, to put it another way, could this be Tech 2'd to 'match' my car, so, upon the time where one day my ECU breaks, I can simply plug the spare in, and Robert's your Mother's Brother?

final... if the answer to Daft Question 2 is ''no, it can be Tech 2'd'', if a Tech 2 is required, does it therefore stand that I might as well get any ECU, ergo- as any ECU can be programmed to 'marry' with any other car...type of thing  :D

Daft Questions, but always happy to learn  :y

1. Don't know, sorry.
2. You need the ECU, halo ring around the ignition barrel and the security pass for the ECU. If you can get them as well, take the current Immob chips.

You can buy blank immob chips from eBay and other place. Tech2 or another popular style OBD computer can do it  ::) But you need the security pass to allow you to add/remove chips. If you buy 'any' ecu then it would need to be reprogrammed. Unless someone on here can correct me, you need Tech2 and a subscription to VX to get access to the maps.

Does yours have the RF transponder style of immobiliser? I'm thinking it could be early enough to have the infra-red type of key fob, which will be a non starter, I suspect.

Another daft question...

Why do you need to swap your ECU?

Hi chaps,

Right,

So, for a 'complete' setup I'd require the other bits, ignition ring etc.. fair do's  :y

Mine's the RF, as opposed to the very early IR type. (think I've got that right) - certainly no black 'orb' mounted near the sunroof switch, anyway.

Only reason I inquire about such things is that a spare ECU has the benefit of... one day mine may go 'pop' and for the (possibly, possibly not as it transpires) very low cost it's a spare part which takes up very little room, but potentially 'life-saver' if mine gives up the ghost one day.
...also if I could get an ECU, clone it to my existing keys etc that would open a field of potentially getting it remapped/chipped whatever, with an instant 'undo button' feature, if the remap is unsatisfactory, damaging, does't work, or even kills my ECU etc etc..

Just theorising  :)
