Title: Decision time next month?
Post by: Taxi_Driver on 24 November 2006, 20:25:15
Not sure what to do.......

Its my merc c220 diesel auto.....not sure to sell it b4 summat seriously goes wrong or will it go another 40k/50k miles??  :-/

Council have hinted they may replate it for another year.....ordinary car would never get another plate.

Its done 170k miles.....ive owned it since nearly new....so know whats been done to it.

And that is.....oil/filter change every 10k....it doesnt use hardly any oil (about 1/2 litre per 10k miles)
Its had its steering lower bushes changed......failed mot last year for that.
New alternator last year......the pulley fell off! (bearings where shot on it)
New battery last year too

And apart from wear and tear items....brake pads/disks/tyres/bulbs/etc....nothing has been done to it.

Its still on its original exhaust....still orig shocks....never had the cambelt changed as its a chain....never changed the auto box oil or diff oil

Can this merc just keep going???

Oh it has got a couple of probs i know about but not going to fix em.....blower fans dont work.....maybe shot blower fan or maybe climate ecu is shot.....other fault is the in and out wiper (if you know what i mean) doesnt in and out.....but still goes back and forward....so not fixing that either as they are blinking expensive  :o

It is coming up 7 years old...will it go 8 years?? Hmmm  :-/ I would like it if it could! without summat major going wrong!

What do peeps think?

Cheers

From my experience in the Middle East and Africa, a 7-years old Merc with 170k is just starting it's service life...

My dad use to run Diesel Mercs for years, and he use to say that 300k miles+ before any major engine overall is not unheard off.

I know Merc had bad reputation for low built quality during the late '90, but I think there is still plenty of life in the car. And Merc Diesels are among the least deprecating cars on the market – even as taxi - so you are likely to sell it next year for not much less then you would sell it this year. That's nearly free motoring - any nearly-new car you'll buy now will cost you a few thousands in depreciation over the next couple of years.

I say keep it...

Mines genuine. As are 4 out of the 5 Mods' counts.  I sure the 'dishonest one' meant to reduce his after testing, but just forgot  :P

oddly i do remember a headline from the Times motoring section a good few years ago, as you mention TD the build quality seemed to dip a while back  :-/ the headline was " Even German taxi drivers are snubbing Mercedes"

Intresting huh ? ;D but sure there over their little blip ( yours seems to suggest so anyway  :y )

TD. I would keep it for another year, but please reduce those oil changes to 5k.. especially on a diesel!

1999 model was probably one of the last really good ones. Not as over engineered as the 80's and early 90's models (they do last forever!) but way ahead of the more recent models.

The timing chain life is very much regulated by the oil changes so I feel 10k changes are a false economy, especially at 170k.

I would budget for a new exhaust though, surely it can't go on much longer??

Consider the replacement TD.  Initial outlay for new car, servicing costs to get up to your high standards and then unknown problems in the future.  At least with the Merc it's only running costs to cover and if ithey get too much - swap it then.  For what it's worth I'd keep it.  :y

LB. Point taken about the oil changes  :-[

Its hard trying to get the cars back for servicing....the guy that drives the merc is not very good at telling me when things need doing to it  :(

Can you believe he waited until last week before telling me the headlights didnt work.....turned out to be both headlight bulbs were blown.....so he'd been driving about with only one headlight working for dunno how long  :-/

If exhaust goes it will be kwik fit cheapy......i think they put 1 year warranty on em which will be good enuf  :y
