Title: Exhaust backbox clarification
Post by: Terbs on 25 July 2015, 12:52:04
Backbox on the latest 2.6 saloon has blown. Ordered one from the net....claiming to fit a 2.2 and 2.6 (2003)
The box has arrived, and I have got the old backbox off. They are different sizes. The new one is smaller in circumference, the front brackets are welded to the pipes, whereas the old one has brackets welded to the box. The new box does look as though it will fit.
Question is, being smaller, will it still work ok :y

Just had a scour of the net....and it seems you can take your pick on what you fit......
Seems a varied amount of backboxes all for 2.6.
So, this new one is going on.
Thanks for anyones time who read this. :y

2.0 single entry and single exit.(also 2.2 fitted with 2.0 cat/centre pipe).
2.2/2.5/2.6 twin entry and single exit.
3.0//3.2 twin entry and twin exit.

All available as saloon OR estate... They are different ;)

Thanks Al...
Can I ask a question....what difference does a twin exit make, and would it work on a 2.5/2.6.
As I have just changed the rear box on the saloon, for a different 'design/size' are these boxes interchangeable (subject to Saloon/estate) meaning, fitting a 3.2 saloon to a 2.6 saloon. ;)

Yes you can fit the twin exit backbox on in place of a single exit one without issue.

I always buy the 3.0 / 3.2 ETS Cat back complete exhaust system as it's advertised with a picture showing the clamshell designed silencers, whereas the 2.5 / 2.6 shows cylindrical silencers. Clamshell design is proven to be quieter :y

I second that.

Strange....my 2.5 came with 'clamshell silencers' and I have to say, 12months in, the car is as quiet as a church mouse :y

Back to original query, why do twin exit instead of single ;)

Perhaps one of the experts could compile a list of which exhausts go on which car. This subject seems to raise its head quite frequently. :y

Cosmetics mostly, but on the V6 with twin pipes all the way from the heads to the back box, a twin exit makes some sense... the twin fitted to a 2.5/6 will be marginally less restrictive, allowing better flow and vice versa fitting a single exit to a 3.0/2 :y
