Post by: vauxsull on 04 August 2015, 12:06:40
At 13.45... First one in my ownership only covered 5k since last one and the advisories from last MIR have been addressed... Still have fingers crossed 😞

Well the ZF part is no longer available (as of 29/01/2014) :

https://webcat.zf.com/ (search 25-E49-0)

So getting self levelling springs is going to be tricky from now on....

3.0L saloon with self levelling VX part number depends on chassis number

VX90295669 up to V1999999
VX90487520 W1000001->W1081184
VX90295666 W1081185 onwards

VX still had the '666 parts last year when mine failed it's MOT on broken rear springs. From memory I was stung £240 notes for a pair.

For £240 GM can keep them on the shelf... Going to replace the shocks and springs for standard units and disconnect the self leveling.... Errrr can someone tell me how I do that?
Title: Re: MOT today
Post by: BazaJT on 04 August 2015, 20:23:24
KYB were available last October as that's what I had put on my Elite, obviously don't know whether they still do them though.
Title: Re: MOT today
Post by: vauxsull on 04 August 2015, 20:46:15
I actually rang KYB in Warrington ( assume this is where they're made) and she tells me they've been discontinued
Title: Re: MOT today
Post by: Lazydocker on 04 August 2015, 20:49:21
If you want to keep the self levelling option, just fit standard springs. I've done it a couple of times now with no ill effects... In fact, it made the back end feel a little better.

Can't do it the other way but standard springs with SL shocks is ok :y
Title: Re: MOT today
Post by: vauxsull on 04 August 2015, 20:55:27
Really??? I would be more than happy to do this but i would like to hear if someone disagrees with this?
Title: Re: MOT today
Post by: Lazydocker on 04 August 2015, 21:13:45
Yep... In fact, I tend to fit heavy duty springs to help tidy the back end up, especially as I have LPG to think of.

What do you think they fitted to Plod cars with SL? ;)
Title: Re: MOT today
Post by: vauxsull on 04 August 2015, 21:15:47
Well spank my arse and call me Susan... Thinking I shall just get springs then...quoted £128 tonhave two standard springs supplied and fitted.. Gonna fit them myself ..
Title: Re: MOT today
Post by: vauxsull on 04 August 2015, 21:17:25
Would heavy duty springs give it a sit up and beg stance or will it sit the same height?

Also on a second note... Car also failed on nearside headlamp stating that its a left hand drive unit hence the odd beam pattern.. It passed MOT over last several years with no mention of this?? Bit dubious if MIT tester knows his stuff  :o

As far as I am aware, the 'kick' emitted from the lamp is nothing to do with the MOT.  It's just the beam direction which is tested.  Do you have a failed adjuster?
Title: Re: MOT today
Post by: vauxsull on 04 August 2015, 21:36:26
I haven't looked at any adjuster my friend.. I wa just gob smacked he said it was a left hand unit.. The cure is to replace it or ( and this is what he's going to do)?is stick one of those yellow wotsits over the lens you get from Halfords to alter the beam.

There is a small lever to the inside edge of the headlight which removes the 'kick'.  It's to allow you to drive your RHD car abroad without sticking stupid stuff over the lenses.  Drive your car a few feet from a wall and switch the lights on.  One lever should be up, and the other down if memory serves me right.

Can anyone tell me to the exact point where this lever inside the headlight is to adjust beam? Bearing in mind its on the side of the battery so access is limited to see. Is it behind the rubber cover over the bulb connection?

Obviously this doesn't apply to HID headlights as no such lever exists behind mine?

Lever was found and adjusted and all went well on MOT retest...however the broken spring  he said I needed and quoted me £128 to supply and fit 2 turned out to be b*****s as I bought a pair of KYB's and fitted them myself only to discover the ones I was taking off where perfect... Apologies all round and a refund of the money I spent on Springs.... Just goes to show I could be well out of pocket for something I didn't need.

Depo lights do have the lever, but it's accessed through the other opening and works slightly differently ;)

I've often presented my car for MOT with the headlights set to driving on the right ..... can't see a problem as long as they're both set the same.

Which is the beauty of finding a MOT station that just does MOTs and doesn't do repairs .........  ;)

There was another issue with this MOT station with a work mates car but far too long winded to put on here... Lets say it ended up with him needing a respray to rear bumper.

Unfortunately, welcome to the world of the MOT being carried out at a garage that does repairs ::)

Vauxsull, I apologise for not replying to your PM's.  I've only just got online to read them.  Glad you got that sorted.  Simple things like those levers are a surprise to many an Omega owner.  :y
