Title: New sockets. Really not pleased
Post by: Webby the Bear on 04 August 2015, 20:43:27
I've been buying a few bits recently for the tool chest. Got some proper oil filter pliers and they are somuch better than the crap thing you tighten up with the screw.... just slips off. the pliers dig in and have got good leverage to spin thefilter round.

anyways I digress. ive brought some britool stuff and have up until today been really pleased.

however I just ordered britool 7-22mm 6 sided deep 3/8 sockets. and first thing of note is that it says ''stanley'' expert. as opposed to britoolexpert. and two of the sockets the chrome finish is peeling off

now the Stanley thing.... I understand they merged with britool. but on the box has stanleys website which I don't care about, but it is odd.

but the finish peeling off. well pissed. been waiting for these for a couple of weeks.  :'( a call to amazon I think  ::)

anyone else experienced britool probs? never had a problem before

You could let them peel and pretend you have impacts.  ;)

Seriously, I would send them with a stiffly worded complaint, sock-et to 'em  :D

 ;D thanks mate.

I'll send them back. Im not that bothered as I know they'll send me a new t. What's more disturbing is how it's peeling off at all. Like cellophane. Especially annoying as I'm trying to improve the 'quality' of my tool set.

Hate to say it but never had this problem with a hellfrauds socket  :-X

Amazon is a marketplace like eBay. It could be a bloke in a bedroom, occasionally he might sell some tools.

I'd agree with JB... Could easily be (and likely are) fakes.

I`m loosing faith after buying crap on net. >:(
Honestly I`d  rather pay the few quid extra now & handle the goods before handing over any cash.
Say what like about certain brands, my front suspension wish & dog bones are Lemforder supplied by a local car factors & I had a close look at the goods before buying. There are green inspection stamps on the base of the outer knuckles.   Never realised the lemforder parts come with replacement nuts & pinch bolt in the bags. All now fitted by a workmate & the car feels great  The same dealer can supply me with the gates cambelt kit which includes the waterpump. Ok it aint cheap over the counter, but I`m paying for peace of mind not some reboxed crap half knackered by a courier.  :y

Absolutely, send them back. You do have to be careful about what you do buy over the internet, maybe tools is not a good idea, you cannot tell from a picture the quality of an item............. ;)

Amazon Marketplace, like egay, has a very high percentage of fakes. As I keep saying, best avoided if possible.

As to faking old school, now tarnished reputation tools, like Stanley and wank and decker, people who search for them are less likely to spot it's cheap Chinese tat

When I get a refund, if I reorder via the link that Deviator posted (using Machinemart) is that guaranteed not to be fake?

I wouldn't expect for a second that a company such as MM would buy from a dubious source. With their buying power, you'd expect them to deal with Draper/Stanley direct. In which case, you'd be damn unlucky. Also it's much easier to walk into a MM with a receipt and broken tool and get a replacement. MM do VAT free days or 10% on other items a few times a year, I tend to use MM on those days.

Not suggesting these are in fact original Britool, and sound like they are indeed chinese fakes. However, as has been suggested elsewhere, Britool 'ain't what they used to be' and quality has been dropping bit by bit fr years now.

In fact check out the prices of used old Made in England Britool on heebay and you'll see that people still pay 50-100 for a full socket set (which may not sound much £ to many, but how much would you expect a 45 year old set of rusty sockets to fetch - certainly not that kind of money) clearly there are people out there that know what they're buying.

I'm myself picking up the odd Britool socket at car boot sales, and eventually I'll have a full set, which shall be going on the bay of e  :y
