I have recently taken to reading the Aubrey/Maturin series of novels by Patrick O'Brian. For those who prefer films to books think Master and Commander and Far Side of the World-the first and tenth books in the series respectively. In some of the books he refers to an area of London called the Duchy of Savoy. This he writes is an area of sanctuary for those sought by bailiffs and law officers for debt etc,and while within the boundaries a debtor cannot be "Laid by the heels" or "taken up" in any way.Does anyone know if this area actually existed? Is it indeed fact or fiction?

If you have a quick google it comes up with some fascinating stuff to support fact. :y
