Title: low brake pad warning light - how much meat left?
Post by: Dan282 on 08 August 2015, 07:52:16
I've just bought a cheap stop gap omega as at short notice the crank sensor has started playing up on my V6 and im driving to Suffolk tomorrow.

The chap I bought it off stated the low brake pad warning light came on a couple of weeks ago. Is there a percentage of pad left before the light comes on. Visually there is a bit of meat left on them but I'd say there about 80 percent worn.

I only need the car for around 500 miles most of which will be cruising speed.

Also it had an oil and filter change in Dec 2014 and has done about 4000 miles but the oil looks black. Is this typical of the 2.2dti?

 :)

For £15.00 is it worth risking life and limb, and your family's safety. Just put a new set in.

Is there a guide how to do them? Any special tools required?

About 2/3rds worn when warning comes on. I try to replace mine before the warning comes on.

In this case, you HAVE to replace them, as you cannot trust what seller said ;)

I first got the warning about a year ago. I should probably change them soon. ;D
My car is only used occasionally though, and driven gently, so brakes tend to last a long time. ;)

To be honest if you're replacing pads at 2/3 gone then you're doing alright. So many cars come in to our shop down to the metal  :o

also depends on how worn the discs are. If there's a lip on the edge of the disc, then the warning will come on earlier

I always advocate binning them at half worn, as they begin to lose the ability to dissipate the heat.

That must be unique to your level of heavy braking, TB  ;D
