Pretty sure that I have since, for that purpose. Can do again.

Er, that didn't go well. When I closed the last IE window got the blue screen of death with instant reboot and checkdisk. That hasn't happened on this computer before.
Still no sign of IE7.
I really don't like MS >:( >:(
-
been using my MacMini now as my main machine for the past few weeks, must say i like it. Fast, silent running. Safari browser is not too bad either, nice change from IE and Firefox.

Yeah, have you noticed how much faster it is in OSX than XP on the same computer?

Oh dear, not my fault Guv!

Ive been tempted to update mine to IE7 but my IE6 works fine....and i believe in 'if it aint broke dont fix it'! Spose i will have to at some point tho' :-/
-
Be aware, MS have set IE7 as an automatic download/install. Which is a shame, as I still think it needs a couple of rough edges sorted, but my contacts there have said they needed it out before Vista went RTM.
-
I dont find it that much different from IE6. It's like everything else, the more you use it, the more you get used to it.
-
Fortunately, MS have released a util to prevent the auto download/install of IE7 for a set period.

I bet that util was in yesterday's monthly download and that is what gave me my BSOD. >:(

Hey, your car's got a year younger :D

......before Vista went RTM.
:-? I saw mention of this in an advert. What is it? I'm considering replacing my PC very soon - before it completely dies - so is it something I need?

It's Microsoft's new OS. I've tried a beta version & it looks good, but personally I'd wait for a while.

Not available in retail or oem channels for a few months yet, corporate customers only from end of this month. Its quite heavy on hardware as well....

I think Vista will have already been used by a fair few people - its had one of the biggest open beta programmes of any software...

None of my pc's (3 of them) have tried to download IE7......i havent downloaded/installed anything to stop them...maybe its my ADSL modem/router/firewall....stopping it :-/

Unfortunately I doubt if my PC will last 18 weeks let alone 18 months. I'll ask at PC World :-? then find out via Google. ;)

Personally I'm glad to have finally moved away from M$ and their "Embrace, Extend, Destroy" policies. I recently upgraded the HD in my laptop which meant a reinstall of the OEM XP Pro, which started well with a General Protection Fault. When I got past that issue and finally got it installed, I quickly remembered how much of a complete PITA a new install of Windows is. I do not want Messenger, Windows Media Player, Movie Maker, Netmeeting etc etc.... Cos there are better apps out there that do the job in half the space (or less) and don't have highly sinister motives for being there (Media Player being the worst of those, hence why they've been forced to release a version of Windows without it in the EU after the anti-trust case). Finally I get round to updating, several hours later it's done and there's loads more sh1te clogging up my system. Brilliant.
And of course, the automatic update is now telling me that IE7 is a security update....er no, opps off, my security update is not running any version of IE and their accompanying zero-day exploits that fit nicely in with the M$ monthly update schedule. Disable automatic updates to prevent both IE 7 and Windows Genuine Advantage (to who? certainly doesn't provide any advantage to me) from being installed behind my back, and every 10 minutes it pops up a warning about updates being disabled. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaarrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhh!
My desktop PC is now Windows free, and I'm migrating my laptop that way too. I ain't touching Vista with a bargepole, XP is such a bitch to set up the way I want without all M$'s junk that I don't even want to start thinking how bad Vista is going to be. Besides, you still get crap like this (http://secunia.com/advisories/22687/) coming in on a regular basis, and you can bet your ass it ain't gonna stop with Vista. It makes me laugh when M$ execs come out with crap like "Vista won't need anti-virus, it's so secure", yeah just like when you said XP won't have any buffer overflows ;D
Sorry for the rant, but I'm still churning from the hours of hassle I had with that laptop reinstall :o

I agree with most of that (though reinstall is easy - all my machines done monthly). Vista offers much for corporates, not sure what it offers consumers, other than improved security.
Trouble is, there is nothing really to replace it. XP is still the best option for consumer desktop...

I suppose it's a bit like being able to work on your car - you either can or you can't. I can do mechanicals but I really really can't do computers! :(
If you know what you're doing I suppose there are far better things than Bill Gate's finest but as I don't I think I'll be stuck with it. :-[

Alas, there isn't, even for nerds.
Mac OSX isn't too bad, though obviously hasn't really got the same software/driver support as Windows, though is improving massively lately.
Linux desktops are flippin' awful. Clunky and slow. And crash a lot (though this has improved lately). Only people who use Linux as a desktop are workers who are forced to, or nerds who just want to be different.
Proper Unix desktops are probably worse than Linux ones - proper Unix vendors concentrate more on the core OS (as they tend to be used as servers) rather than desktop.
Most 'alternative' OSes to replace Windows have either bitten the dust, or become niche products, usually due to lack of software/hardware support.

I think we should go back to using windows 3.1 or windows for workgroups 3.11, excellent OS ;D plus you didnt get virus's in those days ;D and if you were really lucky you got a 9.6k analogue modem ;D
Those were the days :D

Update on me and IE7. Rebooted with install of security updates. Still no sign of IE7 since it was downloaded.
Oh, and yes my first job out of Uni we used Windows 3.11 and AutoCAD for DOS.

Which 'computers' used an ordinary cassette tape for the programs? They took forever & a day to load anything up.

Original IBM PC had a cassette interface, as did some of the CP/M machines that predated PCs.
I've still got a Spectrum somewhere I think, and possibly a ZX81 as well. And a couple of QLs. And a BBC... ...got a house full of junk.

We powered up our Real/32 PC earlier this week, and also we are restating our Netware box

Hmmm, V3 and V4 Netware... ...great OS until ARCserve abends them. Serious architecture problems, which they tried fixing in V5 (not entirely successfully, hence I suspect, the move to Linux).
I remember a troublesome V2.2 box I used to have to support in Harmondsworth. It had a software mirrored SYS: only that mirror never used to survive a reboot. So any planned update used to take hours of frigging about to get it back up. Always a stressful time working on that one. I remember the day we decommissioned that one with some fondness! Always scorn now at software mirroring. Which is a bummer, seeing as I predominately support Sun servers :'(

I always remember when i had just started working at burmah castrol head office as a contractor support guy.....the IT manager was showing me the server room.....he showed me the main file server for the company....all compaq servers. I pointed out that the server had a problem with one of its disks.....easy one really, it had its error light on!! He replied he knew and had a replacement disk sitting on top the server waiting to be replaced during downtime.....i said but its got a hardware raid hasnt it....he replied yes....so i said...well just unplug the disk and bang the new one in, it wont mind. He looked a bit unsure....and esp as i was a 'newbie' ......but he did.....unplugged the faulty disk and slotted the new one in.......you should have seen his face....when all the disk drives put their access lights on and server ground to a halt.....3/4 secs later raid controller had recovered and was rebuilding the new disk......i think the IT manager pooped his pants when everything stopped for a few secs ;D ;D

Tho i am getting back into support again but going for security side not just general pc support :)

Yeah, the Proliant stuff with SMART controllers are decent enough. Except when you get procedures (written by pen-pushers) given to the thicko ops guys that say when a disk fails, just reseat it. Then, because that doesn't fix it (obviously), they reseat all disks. Causing 100% data loss. Tossers >:(

Irritating me already! Why oh why can I not move my menu bar to the top, it is in the middle with the address bar above it and that REALLY bugs me! >:(

Wait until Vista is forced upon you - that really will piss you off. Until you've used it for a few weeks, then you go back to an XP machine again.... ....same, I suspect with IE7 - once you get used to it, IE6 will seem awkward. Not that I think IE7 is ready for mainstream yet...
-
I am usually very slow to adopt new versions of windows and windows programs. Main reason for this is cost :o and also I prefer to let others find out what all the problems are!
Decided to try ie7 on the desktop and thankfully I still have 6 on the laptop (which I mostly use).
This just looks more like firefox.... and that is no compliment!
Oh and WTF is this "allow access to clipboard" thing that pops up every time I post now!! >:(

All i got now is address bar at the top.........search web underneath...set to use google....and fav's/web page tabs under that
