Sd(memory) card needs formatting :)

Might need to format the new card. Under settings.

oh dear I think ive found the fault and its all my fault :'(
there seams to be some pins where the card locates and it looks like somehow ive bent one in the middle
think I need to get it repaired but that's not going to happen before we go away
no one to blame apart from me

I doubt whether you put an SD card in a slot meant for a CF card - it won't fit!
I'm guessing that you have got your terminology confused.
You CAN get an adaptor that will allow you to use the larger capacity SD cards in your camera's slot, but check with the camera's maximum handling capability first.
Don't forget to take the battery charger with you, and a spare battery if you have one - and enjoy your holiday!

You posted about the bent pins whilst I was answering you - you really did try to insert an SD card in there!
The many pins in the CF cards are quite delicate, but someone with a steady hand and a very fine screwdriver might be able to tease them straight for you. Let's hope so, because a professional repairer will do the sucking in of breath and shaking of the head whilst eyeing up your wallet.....

no it was a cf card I just wrote it wrong
think it needs to be repaired right as ive been lent it in good faith and don't want to give it back with a bodge repair
