Title: A/C.
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 13 August 2015, 21:14:02
How much will it affect petrol consumption?.......and roughly how much power will it sap from the engine?

The Signum is a thirsty little bastard. ;)

If the weather is as shite there as it is here then you have no need of AC anyway!  :-\  ;D

I hear that some small capacity cars like a Daewoo Matiz can struggle on the hills if the AC is switched on.....as it saps what little power they have.

iirc, aircon uses about 15-20bhp if it's engine driven... :-\

Sounds to me like you bought another wrong'un. Big, thirsty cars and tight bastards do not make good bedfellows.  ;D

Fooking hell, Al.......as much as that.

I imagine that STMO would need to drive his sluggish 1.4 Astra with the AC switched off. :)

I don't think they wasted time fitting AC to the snotty green ones.  :-\

It is an unfortunate colour but I'm sure the first owner negotiated a hefty discount because of it. :y

From a performance point of view most cars disengage the aircon clutch if you request full power.

It will not be noticeable on the Signum. And economy wise, the drag from an open window will effect it more at anything over about 40mph

I imagine having the AC.....lights.....wipers......radio on must make a huge difference to the range of an electric car, or milk float. ::)

Ac consumes a few kW of energy and only really when first cooling at max Capacity, once the cabin is to temperature then the consumption drops right off.

Nooo! There's nowhere for the heat to go for a start, and that's cruising at 40-50MPH type power, so it would kill fuel consumption.

I'd be surprised if it took more than 1 or 2 hp. I certainly can't detect a fuel consumption change on mine.
