Daughter Catherine has brought home her 2.6 manual saloon complaining of poor brakes in emergency stops. I have just given it a test drive. Brakes pull straight, no twitching, but poor on first emergency application from 30mph, improving on subsequent applications. Any suggestions?

Air in the system?

Jeez! biggriff has gone all religious on us, advising peeps to fit genuine parts!! :o :P ;D
Wot e said tho Terry! :y

Some pads do need a hint of heat in them (TC included). Some need a lot of heat (eg, EBC, esp yellow and red). Some need no heat (such as OE)

Worn wheel bearing can cause these symptoms too.

Thanks to all for advice. This morning I bled the brakes and fitted new GM TC front pads. After a 6 mile bedding in run I took my daughter out for a demonstration run and she declared the brakes 'now excellent'. Job done.
I thought they were OK before, but at least she is happy now.

???

If the bearing has play in it then the disc can "widen" out the pads which on brake application need to travel a bit further.

Hmmm, had a bearing going for some time and had no effect on braking, I suspect it would need considerable wear for this to occur. :y
