About midnight last night my garage access was blocked by a guest's hired Insignia. He offered me the key to move it. I expected it to lack a prop shaft, but I also failed to find the hand brake. Feeling a fool, I had to enquire where the HB was. His wife pointed to a button. It seemed it was an electric arrangement. Gosh.
After googling here and there, I am still not clear how it works, how one performs a hill start, and whether it performs satisfactorily as an emergency brake. Please enlighten me.

Don't they operate the disc brakes on the rear, never allowing it to roll back unless In reverse? :-\
-
Yup... Simply drive off to release... Works either forwards or backwards and doesn't release until the revs reach a predetermined point. To reengage, simply lift button until the light stops flashing.
Not a bad set up once you're used to it :y

Until it goes wrong. Then you'll realise that it's a bloody stupid idea that should have been laughed off the drawingboard.
-
Fair dos, it's far better than tje set up on the Transhit, which only works to prevent roll back, and only for ten seconds ::)
-
I should have been clearer: I meant electric handbrakes in general. If you know anyone who has a Passat or Discovery/RR Sport(they're the worst) ask them about them. Expect to have your knowledge of Anglo-Saxon improved.
-
Like anything, they're fine when they work but shite when they don't! ::)
-
Must be a pain if you broke down as a non runner and need recovery
-
Discovery/RR Sport
Quite easy if you know the cheats to get them in service mode :y

Auto should always be left in park, manual should always be left in first. I've been doing it for forty odd years and never mislaid a car yet.

Works fine in Barnsley.

Not all Insignias with Electronic Parking Brake have Hill Start, so beware ;D
The system is nice to use, but a pain to fix. Still, easier to resolve issues than the poxy VAG setup.

Isn't that part of the driving test, eg clutch control and handbrake at same time Co-ordination,I think its called :)

Exactly. But I supposed we have to pander to the incapable, incompitent and lazy.

How do they work? Discussing it in the pub last night, we could not agree how they operated They could be solenoid, motor, hydraulic (using ABS pump) or pneumatic.
-
Motor and cable (per wheel) on most.
-
In the MOT test, does the tester simply lift the button and measure the retardation as on a mechanical HB test?

yup
Most of the leccy brakes give shit brake test readings as they lock up so quickly before the rollers can react, two locks is a pass though regardless of readings.
