Title: Timing belt kits + wishbones
Post by: Gaffers on 27 August 2015, 10:07:29
As I have been out of Omega ownership for some time, what is the current consensus on timing kits, brake discs and wishbones and where to source them from?

Belt Kits: http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/ (http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/)

Brakes: Still GM kit, if you can get TC price. Otherwise ECP and Pagid for me.

Wishbones: Can of worms here  :D - But i'd go AllGermanParts http://www.allgermanparts.co.uk/ (http://www.allgermanparts.co.uk/)

I think the best way forward with wishbones is to refurb your existing ones with poly front bushes, Vx rear bushes and quality balljoints.  :y

Given as the car may/may not be a keeper... ::)

These... will see you sorted :y

And before anyone bleats... for €81 you could do far worse ;)

Cambelt is as cambelt does, so the Gates kit still seems to be the item of choice...

Car pulls hard to the right under anything but light braking.  Been informed cambelt needs doing and I am wondering if to just replace the front pads or discs too.

I think she is worth keeping going.  I have a job interview this afternoon which will dictate whether I keep her long term or not.  If I do I may slap the LPG kit I have on her instead of kitty and keep the beast for pleasure under the wife forces me to get rid of her.

If you are going to go down the cheap wishbone route, then I'd get a set from a UK supplier via ebay.  I know that Al rates ATP but I didn't find them any better than the previous  cheap ebay set I had and if you get a faulty set then it's easier dealing with a UK company than a German one.  :y

Mind you that is a damn good price for a set of wishbones, track rods and drop links, so I'd probably be tempted again!  :D

The jury rests...

Just be sure to buy the ATP ones direct through my earlier link rather than ebay... any doubts, click here...

Cheap for sure Al, especially if you're buying direct at the euro price now the Pound is stronger.  :y

I don't think they're any better than any other cheap wishbone however. The set I had lasted 8000 - 9000 miles before the handling started to go funny again.  :-\

Have a set of them on the MV6 with poly fronts on, had no issues yet :y

That's because you got rid of the original front bush and replaced with poly before fitting Joff!  ;)

If your original wishbones are in good nick, why replace them?   :-\

If you're going to go to the trouble of poly bushing a set of new cheapies, then I reckon your better off spending the money on new Vx rear bushes and decent ball joints to refurb your originals.  :y

Blimey! We'll be flushing Gixer out with this sort of talk!!  :o  ;D

Firstly I have to agree with the above comments regarding refurbishment, here's the but, Mr teleporter's kit from das fatherland, comes with new droplinks, and track rods, and as we all, know and all together
New wishbones' means full geo, and full geo is easier with new tca's and droplinks.

And secondly if we flush a twixer ake Gollum out that's a job for stemo as he is the twixer's keeper :D

I think new bushes with original wishbones also means full geo, surely?

As for gollum, I know that this is not his OOF alter ego ::) ;D

I heard rumours that Gollum has been known to drive a Taxi from time to time.......  :-X                                                                   :D  ;D

It does indeed, and also relies on your existing wishbones being in a suitable condition to rebush... This point cannot be relied upon. ;)

In an ideal world, buy the Atp arms, rebush them as you see fit, btw ball joints are less than a £10ea, then fit along with set up...

As the rest of the car is an unknown, throw the cheapies on box fresh and assess/fully refurbish the current ones ready for replacement down the road :y

I'd go down the refurb route every time, if that's possible.  Ignore the tat that is bundled, as I've learnt my lesson, and only use GM TREs, as the cost/hassle of geo far outweighs a few quid saved on parts.

Tbh I am leaning that way too.  When your commute to work takes 12 hours a week time becomes very precious :y

I know. Annoying, my commute is less than 25 miles each way, but when the kids go back, its back to >1hr each way :(

Either scenario will likely need a geo

That's without counting the time spent actually going to/from the office.  Add another 5 hours :(

Having thrown genuine GM wishbones away in the past (you live and learn  ::) ) I now use Lemforders but fit, well re-use, poly bushes in the front. Result of this is that both cars have Lemforder wishbones with polys and I have a used pair ready for refurbishing...

I have these bones, drop links and TREs and they've lasted well over a year so far and no issues yet. I got under the car the other day and they still look good with no play  :y

Same for me,all three cars have ATP fitted, but I won't be doing many miles, maybe 3k a year so I won't be the person to give any real feed back on them ::) Other than they seem to fair OK on the shite roads around  Wo kingham ::)

Only on 6 months so far of combination of cheapy wishbones poly'd and GM'd to the hilt, and ATP everything else, so too early to say, really. 6k miles covered, however. Happy with ATP and my setup so far  :)

I think I must have bought a 'Friday' set of wishbones from ATP.  ::)

I fitted them straight from the box and when the front bushes started to fail after 8 - 9000 miles I fitted poly bushes, which improved things but it still wasn't right.  When I removed them to replace the rear bushes with Vx bushes, I saw that the weld around the rear bush casing had started to crack.  :(

Only slightly, but it wasn't going to get any better and I lost confidence.  ::)

Hmm, not sure on the engine number and there are 3 choices.  :-\

From memory if I order the wrong one I can swap the tensioner backplates instead, right?
