Title: Stripped sump plug
Post by: Sir Tigger KC on 28 August 2015, 17:05:09
So I'm replacing the sump plug earlier after dropping the oil and it's doing up nicely and then stops tightening and now it's just going round and round.  >:(  I can turn it with a 13mm spanner!  :'(

Dangleberries!!!  ::)

The local scrappy has a 2.5, but from memory its sat on its guts so I doubt I'll be able to get the sump off that.  :-\

As an interim bodge I'm thinking of smearing epoxy metal around the threads before replacing and doing it up as tight as I can and then put the old oil back in tomorrow until I can get another sump.  ::)  Any thoughts?  :-\

helicoil?

It's already been helicoiled a few years ago, so I've always been careful with it....  ::)

Can they be re-helicoiled?  ???

My temporary bodge is no good either as I can't remove it.  ::)  It's just spinning in both directions.  :(

Merde!  ;D

That were my first thought too...

Not sure the bodge approach would hold for very long as there's nowt to clamp with and oil contamination would prevent a decent bond :-\

The plug sump comes off ok iirc, it's the other one you may have to drop the sub frame for

Yes it looks easy enough to swap and it's a good opportunity to clean the oil pickup, but I guess a new gasket will be required as well?  ::)

Will a sump from a 2.6, 3.0 & 3.2 fit?  ???

The gasket is out of stock, but it shows they exist. Assuming I'm looking at the right sump of course!  :-\  ;D

is it possible to retap the hole. bit of grease on the threads to reduce swarf getting in the sump. then flush with some oil. then refill?

I've got some of that!  :y

Not sure there's enough after doing the oil cooler plate though, so might have to get some A.N.Other goo from the local factors if I can find a sump quickly.  :-\

Webby, I can't get the sump plug out now as it's just turning in both directions and not tightening or loosening. As it's already been helicoiled, another sump is the way forward I reckon.  :)    And I've no toys to throw mate....  :'(  ;D

There's very little to tap. The sump pan is pressed steel and has an ally 'plug' with the female thread pressed in. I'm surprised a  Helicoil was successfully fitted in the past.

This is a bit out of my depth as ive never helicoiled anything. but. I presume the original helicoil insert has come away and its spinning along with the drain plug? and cos theyrea larger diameter than theoriginal hole you cant ''pull'' it out?

You're not missing anything, they're not the best thing on the market. They're not bad for something that's bolted together & left, for something like the above ie something that'll be repeatedly removed & replaced they're crap. Usually they unwind from the hole .... not spin as above.

Wurths Time Serts are far better, but not cheap
