My first was in 1980, I bought a faulty SC80 and fixed it. It was  designed by a chap called John Adams. Got as far as adding disk drives to it. It had an on-board math co-processor, clever stuff, and you could program it in BURP (Basic Using Reverse Polish). I then built another of his designs, the SC84 in 1984. This ran a version of CP/M, great fun.

Suppose my 1st 'IBM compatible pc'

was the one i got after school to use at college

a 386 DX 40, 2 mb ram, 40mb hard drive

Was the envy of most the course in those days.

Upgraded the 2 mb of ram (in 256k sims) to 5mb and ran Windows 3.1  it absolutley flew in comparison to most of the day.

You'll remember the DX were good because they had the built in math coprocessor

had a 1mb video card, cutting edge stuff
it could run 800*600 at 16.7 million colours (just)

Happy Days!!!

My first computer if ya can call it that was (I think) an amstrad 9516 or something.  It was just a basis word processor really lol.  Then upgraded to a 386.., its baaaaad when u can remember using Windows operating systems by numbers rather than a fancy name lol.

I DO remember the 386 was male tho.. couldn't handle multi- tasking.  Was doing something where I needed to keep my 90 page dissertation open, use excel and have other word applications open and it tried to commit suicide several times (died on me several times).  Mind u, like males.., it didn't have much of a brain or memory :P :P

Me goes and hides now.

16k Spectrum. Not many had them.

First proper PC was Amstrad 2086.

Had zx-81, Amiga 500 (still got), QLs (still got), Spectrum+ (still got), BBCs (still got), and bucket loads of PCs with 8086, 286, 386DX, 386SX, 486DX, 486SX, 486SLC, Pentium, Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium IV, Core2 Duo, Core2 Quad, Athlon XP (now there's a really shit cpu).  And probably loads more I've forgotten.

With PCs, had most formats - AT desktop, AT tower, AT midi tower, most forms of ATX, large portables, smaller portables, laptops, notebooks, ultra lights, servers.

Hmm. First computer I actually used was a VAX 11/750 IIRC when I got a summer job where my Dad was working. Shortly followed by a PET4008 which the school acquired. I borrowed a number of Apple 2 derivitives at various times, and got my hands on an Apple Lisa for a while when they first emerged.

My first machine I could call my own was a 48K Spectrum which was eventually replaced by a BBC micro. Not that powerful but you could do so much with one of those! Mine got expanded with bits of wire-wrap board hanging off it until it needed a coling fan to keep cool. That took me right up to the PC era which is where the story gets a bit boring IMHO.

I remember getting my hands on a few RM 380z and 480zs at school. We had a network of them long before security was invented and we used to cause havoc in any IT lessons by taking over innocent classmates machines and putting them to use disrupting the class!

Other machines I came into contact with? I remember a mate of mine having a Dragon32 which was a nice machine, underrated IMHO. Crap colour display though. A mate of mine's dad used to work for DEC and he rescued a PDP11 and a PDP8 out of the skip. I remember playing the snake game on one of them. About all they were capable of despite the size of them.

I still have my BBC micro somewhere. It still works, too! More than can be said for my poor old spectrum. :'(

[smiley=evil.gif]

Oh, yes.  A network of them was well and truly owned by anyone who didn't spend their break times playing footie.

My favourite was a virus for the BBC that I wrote, which copied itself into a sideways RAM image (battery backed) and reprogrammed the video chip to invert the screen after 255 keypresses.

Then I reversed the Vertical deflection coils in the monitor so the picture went upside down when they removed the "infection".  ;D

Happy days.

Started with a ZX80 kit here. Owned all of the Sinclairs including a QL
+. Had Vic20, C64 then onto the awesome Amiga! I still have an Amiga CD32 in the garage, my kids think I'm nuts when I start explaining how it was the first true 32 bit games console.(I'll sell this if there are any collectors out there)

Used some of the less popular home computers including the Dragon, Oric 1, Atmos and the really old TRS stuff!

God brings back memories  ::),

I had a Commodore PC 20, with a 20MB hard drive, god it was massive for the time, with a power house 8088 processor with 3 different clock speeds 4.44, 7.2 or 9 MHz and CGA graphics (3 colours).

What a revelation when I seen another computer with EGA (16 colours), then VGA(256 colours) and SVGA (16.7million) graphics.  Cost £1000 in 1989.  :o

My first HDD for PC was 30Mb.  "I'll never fill all that up" (baring in mind I used to load Windows from floppy ;D

I remember that thought.  I went through a phase recently of building machine just to be able to add hard drive storage (when drives were approaching 200GB)  I built myself a sserver with a 40GB boot Drive, 160GB working drive and 4 x 180GB server drives.

Then I started adding the USB 2 Caddys with 300 GB drives in, Now iI progressed to NAS, only using 2 x 500GB at the mo, but cn add 2 x USB to it as well.

Next move is onto TB drives  and get rid of all the old gear.

All that from wondering if I would ever fill 30MB ;D ;D ;D ;D

First computer used was a burroughs B6900, 32mb ram , was about the size of 12 double wardrobes!

Got my first in 1984, a spectravideo, which I upgraded to a massive 64k ram and ran MSX.

God I feel old  :-[
Bloody hell, forgotten all about MSX ;D.  Another Microsoft initiative to rule the (enthusiast) world...   ...shame only compatible at the source code level.

Apart from working on just about every make and model of PC since 1989 the first big machines I worked on where the Unisys A series mainframes, A5's and A10's... Remember the A10H comprised of two processer units, two memory cabinets and the boot microcode was on a shared disk pack! Moved on to various Unix boxes - Altos, NCR, Convergent Tech then finally on to Sun Sparcservers.

I feel old too!!!

First one was a Commodore PET.  I think it had 16K of RAM.  Input programs by typing in lines of code from a magazine...i cannot remember the name of the mag...and then saving it to cassette.  Big problem if you typed a colon instead of a semicolon. :(

zx spectrum (rubber keys) 48k. We paid the premium to have the extra memory!!!!
Saying that now sounds poncey as hell, but in 1984-5 it was true ;D.

Played "chuckie egg" and "elite" to death.
Still remember the nights at mates homes trying to copy tape to tape with a 5pin din lead. 3/4 of the way through it would always stop >:(
I remember buying C15 blank tapes in bulk

1st proper pc was £1300 out of currys (1993) with a 1gb hard drive. People used to faint when they heard a 1gb hard drive. Nowadays my phone's got 8 times the memory

I was more into programming on my ZX Rectum, rather than games. Indeed I learnt assembler on it.

Still enjoyed Manic Miner, then Jetset Willy once I'd got a 32k Rampack for my 16k model....

first my a TI-99 with speech module, all games and programs were cartridges so no loading time!  :y

followed by a BBC Master with dual floppy drives, separate keyboard and some ibm processor inside it.

Then a 286 with 4mb of ram and a 40MB HDD   :o :o

Wasnt until I got a 386 that windows 3.1 came along  ::)

I feel old!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

First time I came across Windows, loaded it up - rubbish - deleted it all to get more disc space.

It was really pants and no Deskview (or whatever)

Came across concurrent DOS not long after

Yup, definitely, you are old if you used one of those.   :)

I started programming on an NCR315 - 20K 12-bit words.  Filled an entire room.  Very advanced for 1967.

My first computer at home was a BBC B in 1982 - wrote a complete business system on that.  Could never save up enough to buy discs for it, though, probably because my second child arrived the same week as the computer.

Still got both of them. :)

Built a ZX80 from the kit, swapped the measly 1K ram chip for a mega 2K one!!  ;D
Then built a ZX81 from kit, and bought an original 16K rampack, almost the size of the computer!!!
Spectrum 48K, followed by a QL.... (bit of a sinclair freak..also had a 'black watch' (anyone remember them!)
Atari 520STE, before aquiring a 286Dx machine (real luxury  ;D ;D)

Still have all the sincleair machines, and they all still work, (except the microdrive tapes)

AAHHHHHH.... the memories... :) :) :)
