Title: Auto lights and wipers.
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 31 August 2015, 11:58:09
Are they really the greatest invention since sliced bread?

Nah......not even close.

I had them on the Merc and now have them on the Signum.

The auto wipers are fine when it's really pissing  down but a few spots of rain or light drizzle seem to confuse them to the point of uselessness.

At least the auto lights come on at some point during the 24 hour rotation of the Earth so I suppose I should be thankful for that. Sometimes I end up willing them to come on as darkness closes in. At other times they come on and stay on in bright sunshine. :(

The Merc was no better than the Signum, worse even. The auto wipers fooled by just about anything that wasn't a monsoon.

Both mine work fine .... though a low sun, be it dawn or dusk, confuses the auto lights in that they're on in bright sun

I've adjusted the 'sensitivity' on the wiper stalk. SFA difference. :-\

We all know that Omega auto wipers are shite in all respects. I find newer ones better, such as those on Insignias etc. I guess they have just been refined over the years.

I think auto lights are currently the same as Omega auto wipers currently.  Too slow to come on at times, and come on unnecessarily at other times.

The worse piece of automatic technology currently fitted, that should be banned IMHO, is auto dipping headlights, as the poor bastard you are following or coming towards you has to tolerate an ice age of blinding light until such time the system sees you properly :(

Yep..... reports of this in Autocar magazine on a new top of the range £30,000 van made by Ford.

I believe the van goes by the name S-Max TDCI Titanium. :)

Having been followed by something with automatic lights along a twisting road with alternate open and heavily wooded sections I was initially irritated that the breakwit was flashing me for no apparent reason and then properly annoyed that they either didn't know (or didn't care) that their lights were switching on & off every 1/4 mile  >:( >:(

Another useless driver aid to get folk to buy the car just like the automatic handbrake set ups  ::)

Auto wipers on the jag seem to work fairly well    ……   tested thoroughly on a trip to wales,  where there are 37 different words for "rain"

not used the auto light thing yet…..   as i've not been brave enough to rely on it or , bored enough to read the manual section about them yet…..

I was impressed by the auto dipping lights on the E Class... especially on near empty motorways :y

Wifey's megane has auto lights and wipers. I don't like them, she does. I say they don't work very well, she says they do. I say she hasn't got a clue what she's talking about, she says I'm an old bastard.  :-\

Just reminder her.....

Rule 1 - a man is always right

Rule 2 - if a man is wrong, rule 1 applies.

Must admit I don't really see the point in them.Is it so very difficult to operate wiper stalk if raining or light switch when light fades?

They'll be inventing driverless cars next ::)

Latest "gizmo"to take away any form of driver responsibility seems to be auto brake application-as can be seen on latest Nissan Note advert.

Loads of things like that .... electric seats, is it so hard to lift a lever & move it yourself? .... electric windows, is it so hard to use a windy handle? electric sunroof, central locking ..... etc etc etc

I think all cars should have auto lights. I was driving in torrential rain today, vision of oncoming vehicles was very poor, yet still people were driving with no lights on. Our lights came on automatically and, in fairness, they are pretty good at it.  :y I would have put mine on manually if need be but they did the job for me.  :y
Auto wipers are a bit hit and miss during light drizzle periods and require a bit of manual input now and again. I can leave auto wipe on and still use flick wipe without turning auto wipe off so not really an issue on mine.  :y

Going to work the other morning (0600ish) when the weather was horrible, I couldn't believe the number of cars with NO lights on at all. New Mercs don't seem to have an option of 'OFF' on the switch.

Agreed - auto wipers on mine pretty good and sensitivity adjustable.
Auto lights also work well (better than on my old X350), as do the autodip lights

Strange that most people that knock them are those that don't have them ;)

Opps, sorry, not my intention to knock them (apart from auto dipping lights, which will likely always be kak).

I think the wipers are now refined enough to be useful, unlike the Omega ones which are just awful.  I think auto lights still have some way to go (going by what is fitted on current model Insignias and Mundanos).
