Brother called me and says the car struggles to get up to 20mph and the red battery light is on. Its happened a few times. Just drove car again and its ok? I'm afraid I don't have multimeters etc.. but does anyone know if this is more likely to be battery or alternator issue. I will look at the car this weekend but any pointers appreciated!

Normally alternator given what you've described, battery being duff wouldn't trip the charge light ,needs a volt meter on it to confirm before spending anything. :y

Thanks for the heads up :y

Does sound like alternator but needs a proper test.

I started the car and it was not the battery light but the engine management light on - also noticed the gear selector lights flashing like a xmas tree when moving from p to d.
Before i could do a paperclip test my brother needed to go to London, so will have to do it another time.

Selector switch on it's way out most likely :-\
See guide for cleaning it as first port of call :y

Thanks - have read the guide but am not understanding the realignment bit - will read again after a not so long day.

A Paperclip test threw up a knock signal circuit 1(16) and telltale (checklight) voltage low (135).
A couple of days ago a new brake light bulb was replaced so I am not sure if this is related to 135?
Does the 16 code mean a new knock sensor or is it a red herring?
Any advice would be appreciated.
P.S. The symptoms of slow acceleration have not happened for the last week despite being driven every day.
