2000 PFL 2.5 petrol petrol manual estate
In preparation to change the cam belt I am striving to loosen the power steering pump pulley bolts. 3 of them T10 male head, usually with the aux belt on they are easily loosened. Not on this car; the pulley slips in the belt. Is there any way I can hold the pulley stationary?
-
can you clamp another polyvee belt round the pulley using vicegrips :-\ :-\
Do you need the pulley off?
-
Possibly I could, but I am not sure that would hold any better. Thanks for the thought.
I assumed I could not get off the cam belt cover without removing the PSP pulley. I know I must remove the water pump pulley, the wiring harness, the bottom pulley, and the aux belt tensioner. Do you reckon I can get off the cover off without removing the PSP pulley?

or make a 'peg spanner' to engage with two of the circular cut-outs in the pulley.
You might find you already have one if you have a 9" angle grinder.

Can't remember specifically ...... I only ever did two cam belts :y :y

Yep

Stick a screwdriver through one of the holes in the pulley, and wedge it against the body of the pump. Loosen all 3 bolts and remove screwdriver. Takes less time than reading this.

I tried a Stilson wrench; I have a 9" angle grinder with disc removal tool; I will try it in the morning.
There is no maintenance guide for V6 cam belt change on this forum. Haynes infers I must remove the PSP pulley to remove the cam belt cover, and suggests putting a socket on an extension through one the holes in the sprocket on one of the power steering pump bolts; I hadn't thought of that, again will try it in the morning. Haynes also says I should use new PSP bolts on reassembly.
Thanks for help. I suspect I do need to remove the PSP pulley. If anyone has changed a cam belt without removing the PSP pulley, please say so!

There's a DVD ..... :y

You do need to remove PSP pulley to get cam belt cover off.
Try a oil filter chain/strap wrench on the pulley ;)

As above, common sense, and no faffing about.
if you've rounded the bolts, then its mole-grips time.

A half inch extension bar works better than a screwdriver for this job :y

Holding pulley with socket and extension on pump holding nut through hole in pulley, have loosened 2 bolts, but have rounded head of third. Cannot shift third bolt, socket pops off head of bolt. Oh dear,.
I considered removing pump and taking it to a local engineer, but removal involves removing the pulley. Could a socket or rod be welded to the existing bolt? Is there a better solution?

Grind the head off the bolt. (carefully!)
Remove the pulley.
Using molegrips on the stub of the bolt, unscrew it.
Do the job that caused you to get this far
-
Thanks for the quick response, chaps.
The screwfix nut removers might work, but I am nervous of it giving enough grip on a tapering bolt head to undo it. I used a 24" breakr bar to undo the other two bolts. The smallest nut in the set is 11mm, the bolt head is 9mm diameter.
Attractive idea to grind off the head, remove the pulley, and remove the stub with mole grips. I have found a spare PSP pulley in my spares pile - the good news- but it is only 1.5mm thick in the centre, so would not leave much stub to grip with the mole grips.
I have never welded in my life. They tell me gas welding is tricky, electric welding less so. I hanker after the idea that the cheapest Machine Mart electric welder (£60) would allow me to weld the socket to the bolt. Tell me I am wrong!

I think I see your problem: a 24" breaker on an M8 bolt. I'm surprised you only broke one.
You might struggle with the molegrips, but the grinder will allow you to cut a screwdriver slot in the remains of the bolt. The bolt won't be particularly tight once the head is no longer attached.
Weld on a nut, not a socket.
The £60 welder will be a stick, and will require some skill/finesse to weld such small parts together. You won't have that without a good deal of practice.

Clarification, I broke no bolts. Last night one came out with a short ratchet and the aux belt on, and I damaged the head of a second. Today with the pulley held by the extension I got a second bolt out with the 24" breaker bar, but could not shift the bolt with the damaged head.
You were right and I was wrong. A rusted in bolt (as in exhaust sections) will be a sod to remove, after heat, and it will be hard to turn along its entire length. A bolt, tight but not rusty, is tight mainly by friction between the head and the top surface. In this second case, once the head is ground off the friction is removed and it should turn easily. The bolts in the PSP pulley were not rusty (see pic) and indeed were finger tight once cracked. I feared that the curved shape of the pulley would prevent me cutting a saw cut in the bolt stub, but of course once the pulley is off that would not be a problem. So that is my plan; thanks for your advice.
I am busy in the next few days ( High Wycombe meet Saturday) so job is on pause. Will report progress.

Ground head off the bolt, cut a slot in it, unscrewed it with a screwdriver. Thanks Nick, good advice, you've taught me a new trick. Now I can get on and change the cam belt.
