Title: Cat deterrant
Post by: Terbs on 12 October 2015, 18:40:32
Hi all...

What is the best way to deter cats. No guns/dynamite/poisoning etc.
Electronics would not work in the garden, I doubt, due to being open. I want something they hate (dog is out of the equation) to keep them out of the garden, crapping everywhere, and away from my aviary.
I have hosepiped them in the past, but they are coming at night now.

You need to 'mark' your territory Tony and do it regularly so that the cats know that the garden is 'owned'  :y

I'm sure the neighbours won't bat an eyelid when they see you peeing in the flower beds!  ;D

Yes but it has to be male pee, so don't send Mrs Terbs out there!  ::)

Doesn't work. Orange peel does for a short time, or sit in garden on duty with a super-soaker, or nerff gun.

STEMO...actually I did not click the link...the clue was in the link ;D

I have just gone out to shut the garage, and two of the bastids come past me like a dose of salts.
And another near the aviary.
Nerf guns....got some here, but I don't get problems during the day. This morning we found one of our globe solar lights busted, glass everywhere. They were fighting out there last night. Its too cold to sit out there waiting.....
Tried pepper....not successful :(

I think the cats, are using your garden as a play-ground, because there's no threat's, you might need to go and buy a cat.. If you cant beat em join'em

Last ditch saloon is catch the moggie's and pee on them, :)

I had half a dozen of these around my garden and I thought they worked early stages with the cats seeming to creep around the edges. Trouble is they corrode after a couple of years and they are best wired permanently - batteries will need checking so not worthwhile in my view.

All 6 progressively stopped working properly over time but they were out there all weathers. Main problem was corrosion of the contacts where lead enters unit from ac adaptor.

What annoys me, is the fact that these cats do not live in close proximity to my garden....... >:(

Maybe toms then as neutered males don`t tend to wander far and they`ll be far more persistent than neutered males and as they`re causing bother mainly at night points to that too.
As Big Griff pointed out lion poo might do it but nothings going to be 100% successful when they know tweety pie is in there  ;)

........
I have hosepiped them in the past, but they are coming at night now.

Movement sensors that activate garden sprayers. Inward leaning fence brackets with netting fitted to it loosely (cats prefer something solid underfoot), or use humane traps and let them out for a bit of exercise in the services on your way to Poole.  ::)

I know my garden is a bog in places....but there is a limit. We have new neighbours aside and behind us. I am sure a mass 'OOF pee in' would have gone down well, Martin ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Grrrr ......just had two out there wailing...I assume fighting. >:( >:(

Really winding me up now

I did put a link to that in an earlier post but thinking about it, freezing in winter would be a problem.  :-\

That sounded like a good idea to me Alan, but same as you, I did have the winter thought.
I'll probably try an electronic sounder (or two). As long as it does not affect my birds, although I think the pitch is different on the ones I looked at in STEMO's link :y

Having researched this a bit for our garden (after the next door's flea magnets have turned me from ambivalent to being an avid cat-hater) I understand that there are very limited options that work on a permanent basis. These are:

A) Get a cat of your own
B) Get a dog
C) Lethal or Catch-release methods of control

Everything else seems to work for a while but then they get used to it. We are going for (B) given that (A) is more adding to the problem than anything else and (C) is something I wouldn't ever contemplate no matter how much I hate the little sods. Oh and its also illegal.

TBH it really p!sses me off that people have cats in an urban environment knowing full well they will cr@p on other people's property catch and kill wildlife, climb on cars and generally make a nuisance of themselves. Just seems symptomatic of how little consideration people have for others.

Most of what you describe, regrettably humans do most of that, BUT in a much larger and more destructive way.......and this is a subject...which has previously  been done to death,SO....I'm away to read this weeks edition of The Pig Breeders Weekly and listen to The Archers. Might pop back later and see if it's back to being the Omega Owners Forum ::) and will be offering some tips on how to make the shape of an Omega out of a privet hedge with topiary and how to starch your carpet slippers back into shape after the dog has eaten them and chucked them back up .....NOT!!! I've got a life :)

Love this :D.  :y

TBH I concluded a long time ago that I work a lot better when isolated from most other people (and doubtless they feel the same way). I just need to work out a way to work from home and I'll be all over it!
