Title: Police cars
Post by: EMD on 16 October 2015, 00:58:50
Often wondered why police cars in this country dont have the front passenger area blocked/wired off like in the usa  :-\ Just been watching traffic cops and there have been some serious situations and death caused by prisoners in the back kicking off so would make sense to block the front off , no :-\

Yep, if you carry dogs in your car, its sensible to put them in the back and to fit some sort of guard ;)

Our criminals have better manners than in the US. Our most prolific serial killer was a Doctor. Our most prolific sex offender was a Knight of the Realm. Even Jack the Ripper was rumoured to be the son of Queen Victoria.

Our scum have class  :y

I understand the theory behind it is similar to the argument against arming the police.

Measures like cages, weapons etc up the anti for criminals and also de-humanise them, which in turn makes them more likely to be violent, act up etc. If you look at similar programmes based in the UK, frequently loading a prisoner into the cage in the back of a police van causes their behaviour to deteriorate (or rather deteriorate further!).

On the other hand, I'm certain cost plays a significant role too ::)

But surely its the safety of the police in the front thats more important especially when they have their back towards them  :( I think they should have the front sectioned off and cage wire on the glass in the back  :y

American police use full-size American cars, like Crown Victorias in specific police trim . These make an Omega look like an Astra.

British police use bog-standard Astras, so by the time you'd fitted the cage the only criminals you would be able to sit in the back would need both legs amputated.

Hmmm..I like it...could be a form of deterrent ;D

But surely they could just fit a mesh behind the seats, not a full cage ?

In our force (and possibly some others) we used to employ civvy police staff to drive fully kitted custom made Mercedes Sprinter vans to collect & transport our 'clients' to the nearest custody facility. They were absolutely brilliant at their jobs, would go out of their way above & beyond their role, to make our jobs easier and keep us on the streets. They were like gold, especially on a Friday & Saturday night when there was a queue in custody, they'd wait with 3,4,5+ prisoners and enable you to go back out into the breach. They'd sit with hospital arrests too until they got discharged and could got to custody. Then due to the reductions in police staff they got rid of them  ::) ::) ::) ::) One of the most valuable resourses we had, now on a Friday you can wait anything up to 2-3 hours to book a 'client' in.

Oh and health & safety dictates that we have to be double crewed to 'escort' a 'client to custody in a police vehicle. It would help if we were EVER double crewed!!! >:( >:( >:(

Look on the bright side, I'm sure all those inefficiency savings helped that chief constable get their knighthood. :(
