Title: erratic temperature gauge
Post by: andy76mv6 on 25 October 2015, 10:02:56
Looking for some help my temperature gauge is misbehaving I get no reading mostly with occasional warning light then I will get a normal reading for a short while then it just drops as if it lost it's signal! it sometimes jumps right up touching the red!
where does it get it's signal?
what adverse affect will it have on cooling system?
hoses and expansion tank feel normal temp.

Coolant temp sensor is right at the back of the V ..... in the middle. Not the easiest of things to get to.

If it's just the gauge/sender that's u/s then yes ....... but I can only guess at your car's fault from here  ;)
Has there been any work on the coolant system recently? Is there enough water in the header tank?  :-\

Check the connection first. The sensor itself if generally robust, but the spade type connector is shite.

We also cant say whats safe, as we're unable to say if it really is overheating.

I just bought it  I have service history I will look.
connector sounds possible as bumps in road and heavy braking seem to bring it back to life momentarily?
no recent work on cooling system(none documented).
no coolant loss since I got it.
done 6 miles this morning coolant tank and hoses felt normal.
many thanks folks!

A good chance it's just the spade connector then as The Boy suggests. Cheap option too  :y

I believe that this is a problem with a gauge it self, not the sensor or connector on sensor.
On all omegas that I've had (or used) I seen that temp.gauge starts climbing up towards red area (sometimes slow, sometimes it goes up in a second).

General cure for this - a light tap on the instrument panel, and it goes down.

Grounding the blue wire from the sensor should make the gauge go to HOT

Been working fine today has about a 10 minute spell where it went a bit crazy. At one point it went right off the scale  and dropped back to bottom twice . Definitely think it's the connection will try a get a look Tomorrow.
