Got to forget 0-60 times for a while ;D and concentrate on this cam belt!!!
As some may know I had a slight accident when I replaced my timing belt a couple of years ago :-[ and the belt went and destroyed my top end :D luckily I had some good fellow OOFing friends (namely TMF and TB) who helped me get the motor back on the road.
However the new Contitech belt kit has, from the very start, had a squeak. I ignored it initially as I assumed it was the new belt settling in but it didn't disappear.
Just to add, it was set up absolutely perfectly by the master TB and he turned it over loads and it was perfect, so no fitting issue. Just for the record.
Anyways i whipped the aux belt off and its definitely cam belt as the noise didn't disappear. Checked, rechecked and triple checked the cover and anything else was fouling it. nothing at all!
anyway, noise kinda settled down but was alwaus there slightly. but lately (over the last couple of months) the noise is really squeaky after a good thrashing.
today was the final straw...every time the cooling fans came on there was quite a strong rubber smell coming in to the car.
coincidentally i ordered the new kit last night (due to the aforementioned increase in noise after booting it) so the cars staying on the drive til this new one goes on.
current one is a Contitech as said and ive ordered a Gates set from allgerman. ive used Gates on a few cars now and trust theyre quality.
anyways rant over but after the first contitech shredded and this ones noise issues, im not sure ill ever order a contitech kit again!

If you will keep ragging it..... :P ::) ;D

lol only been ragging it for a few months. once car properly warmed up also ::) ;D :y

Fitted about 6/7 Conti kits to V6 Omegas without any ongoing issues over the 40+K "life", plus 2 Gates kits, again without issue.

With the first belt, are you absolutely certain that the tensioner/adjuster never came loose (the one that sits between cams 2 and 3). This happened to me on my previous Omega when I had the first belt fitted by a garage, but I was extremely lucky that I heard a jingling noise and turned off the engine. :o Refitted it myself after that, and let them know how unhappy I was.
It would be so easy for this to happen, as when you tighten the bolt the tensioner works loose and when you set the tensioner the bolt works loose. Obviously critical to hold the big nut while you torque up the bolt.
If the belt just snapped then that was beyond your control and was down to very bad luck so I can understand your apprehension. :y

Sorry YZ I should have been more clear. . . The cambelt going was pure fitter error (that fitter being me :-[). I thought long and hard about what I did and I realised that I'd tensioned the belt and THEN adjusted the bottom right idler. So I hold my bear paws up to that one :y
I am actually looking forward to getting the Gates kit on there. . . Fitted one to my mums fusion and it's so quiet. That one I definitely got right ;D

Ah ok. :y At least you know your way around it this time. :y I probably take longer checking and double checking than most people take to do the entire job. ::)

I don't think you can over check :y
Though I'd say that sohc and dohc engines are so much easier to do. Especially the fords. They are almost un-balls-upable. . . . . . Almost ;D

According to the markings tipexed on the breather bridge and plastic bit between headlights the cam belt was done on mine at something over 78,000mls it's now showing just over 135,000mls.Checking through old mot certificates it would have hit the noted change mileage in 2007,so could be due a change perhaps :-\

Mileage and age is overdue I'd get that changed if I were you :y

No issues to date with Conti here. Both mine run them, and certainly the MV6 gets more hard work than your 0-60 tests... ...and despite her protestations to the contrary, Mrs TB has been caught ragging the nads off the Elite as well.
Frequently a sound and smell of burning rubber, but that's not from the engine...

lol! you animal!
thing is everyone here uses contitech so I know theyre good for omegas. but I know gates are good so that's whats going on this time :y
-
I have Conti fitted, and an occasional squeak on startup, which I havent isolated as being the timing yet, could be a stiff tensioner (aux belt is new) but, given there have been the odd issue with Conti, and no such stories from Gates, I'll be buying Gates next time. :)
-
Could I have your old kit, please? I'm still trying to eliminate this noise on my v6 :y
-
Still no idea what it is then james ?

Not had time to look :(
-
You can mate. But I'll be inspecting it myself anyway. I suspect a dodgy idler or tensioner as opposed to a duff belt.
-
You've misunderstood.... I want to fit a kit to my v6 to see if mine is causing a knock noise :y
-
Thought you were sorted for a 'tester' timing kit, James? I've got an old, but quiet one kicking around :)

Yes please mate. Let me know how to cover postage :y
-
I still reckon your problem is the belt, James. Keep your pulleys, just change the belt for an old known silent one. Belts don't fail, pulley bearings do.

How would a belt cause a knocking noise?
