Title: No spark
Post by: BazaJT on 01 November 2015, 09:51:24
A while ago I bought a Lexmoto 125 as a none running project. The engine turns on the starter and there's good compression, but no spark at the plug.So far it's had a new plug,coil/plug lead, cdi unit and stator.Given that I know nothing of vehicle electrics does the regulator/rectifier have anything to do with the spark or is it just to deal with battery charging/lights etc.?

Check what triggers the spark, bike equivalent to miggy crank sensor!

Does it have a 'kill switch' and if so has this been checked/bypassed? If it is faulty it would 'ground' the coil, preventing any spark.  :-\

This goes for a side stand switch as well, if fitted.

It should have a side stand switch, but that along with the sidestand itself is absent.Yes it does have a "kill"switch,so I'll have to try checking that out although it does have quite a positive action to it.The two wires for the sidestand switch I've bridged together in case it was that, would that be acceptable?

I believe that should be ok.  :-\
My way of thinking is that the side stand switch 'connects' when bypassed by joining together and the kill switch 'grounds' when joined together. So, I assume that to test the kill switch you could simply remove a wire.  :-\
Have you got a multi-meter to test for continuity?

Those kill switches caused many problems on the old CB250NDX  :( Always spraying wd or something into the switch when it rained .. worked for a while but replaced the switch and all good again for a while . Oh probably didnt help using it to make the engine backfire  ;D

No multi meter, however I'll look into disconnecting a wire-can't hurt-last time I rode a bike they weren't fitted with such things you just simply turned them off to stop them!Heck even disc brakes were only just beginning to be fitted on bikes when I packed in riding :D

Pretty close that one.Last bike I had was an Ariel model VB a 600cc sidevalve single with magneto ignition.Mis time letting valve lifter go when kick starting and it was a real leg breaker-well so I'm told ::)

Further tinkering on my part has resulted in my getting power to the coil.Using a test bulb[one of the indicators]clipped to the coil wires/terminals reveals that on spinning engine over on starter bulb flickers on and off.Still no spark at plug though. So a duff coil/plug lead, which on closer inspection I now find is in fact a used one and not new as the bikes seller had told me.An alternative I suppose is that when they replaced coil they connected the wires to the wrong terminals, physically this is possible but what would be the consequences?

A fine V-Twin you have there, Mr Emd. :)

It now runs!!After much tinkering about replacing a couple of bits which are apparently the usual suspects on these bikes it turns out that the previous owner on replacing coil had wired it up again wrongly :-[ So couple more things[speedo cable for one]to do then I can take it for mot. Here's hoping 8)

That's the one EMD.Mine is black[does this make it faster-like Omegas?] ;D Apparently engine/gearbox are based on a Suzuki unit,so I'm told anyway, but willing to learn different if that's not the case.
