We're off to Germany in December, so I've just picked up a set of Intra alloys - 7 x 16 - to put on a set of Winter Tyres.... Just after a bit of advice as to which 'budget' brand to go for and what choice of tyre size and speed rating I could go down to.... Cheers, Rich.

I've got a set of CD alloys in the garage, with Dunlop Winter Sport 3D on them.
I used them a couple of years ago on a drive to Austria in the winter, great tyre on snow. Some of the hotel car parks were not gritted or ploughed. Drove straight through it. No problems.

Oh, little tip. Put pure screen wash in, that goes down to around -30 or -40.
Otherwise at some German services you will be running the windscreen pipe work, under the hot tap in the gents ::) ::) ::) :-X ;D
If you go near Luxembourg, stock up here on fuel and especially screen wash. It's massively cheaper there, than over Ze German border :y

Thanks for that.... From what I can gather, I need to keep to the same size, i.e. 225/55 16, but am not sure if I can go down to 'H' rated tyres or have to put on 'V' rated winter rubber. It's not like we're going to be bombing along at 140 mph!!!

I've gone with V rated, but estates are 3.2s and I drive quite hard... but it's a preference. If yours is a saloon then H will be fine :y

It seems, you can put on lower Speed Rated tyres, as long as you put a sticker on that shows you are aware of the lower rating. ;)

If using lower speed rated tyres, you MUST tell your insurance, as it could potentially nullify it.
Some manufacturers pick a speed rating for the tyre construction, rather than its rated speed. I've had a few sub 120mph cars that had to have v rated tyres due to manufacturer specs.
