Driving to work today there are some traffic lights,at a road called hart lane hartlepool. For the last two days they have not been working,my approach red other green. So not just me but other cars slowly went through for the last two days, but this morning at 5.10.I approached the lights they were red,a police car pulled directly behind me from a side road.So i waited for approx 4min he did not do anything, like flash or blow his horn.No other cars passed in front of me or were waiting opposite me,i knew he was there so i pulled out.He immediately followed me keeping back for about 1 mile, then he put his lights on and i stopped. He asked if i knew what he was stopping me for,so i said yes for going through a red light. He said well why did you,i explained that for the last two days the lights were faulty, and i had gone through on red the last two mornings. He said he had gone through there earlier on blues and twos, and that his side was green and the other red.I don't know which direction he was coming from,so they probably were.He told me the dangers of going through red lights, and that i was on his camera doing it.He said he should be issuing me with 3 points and £100 fine, but has decided not to take action. He then noticed my seat belt was not on(BTW my wife and i always ware our belts)and asked why.I told him the truth that when he stopped me,i pulled in put the car in park and put the handbrake on.And undid my belt in case he wanted me to get out of the car,as the engine was still running. He leaned right in to the car and said,ok sir i believe you and i wont be taking any further action on the seat belt. And the only reason i am letting you off for the red light,is that it 5.15 in the morning and the roads are quiet.Think i was quite lucky don't you, could have done me for both offenses.I think he was quite professional and lenient, nice to think there are still some good cops out there. But the wife is still worried,he could go back to the nick and change his mind. And the first thing i know about it is letters in the post,he gave me no documents at the roadside. So i assume he cant :-\ i hope so.Dean.

It'll be fine, Dean, stop being paranoid. What possible reason would he have for changing his mind?

Oh....and when you go past tomorrow, check behind for this copper, you never know..... ;D
Then throw the traffic lights in a ditch. :y

Indeed. I believe (although I'm no expert) that, if he intended to make a prosecution, he would have had to inform you at the time.

I believe if he wasn't on his blues and twos, by going through a red light he may too have committed the same offense. Doesn't matter if he was following you, as far as I am aware unless on an emergency he too has to abide by the rules of the road.
Maybe those in the service on here could confirm/refute?

If it happens tomorrow with a police car behind just park up at the lights and see how long before the policeman asks you to go through the red lights!!!
Make sure you have a camera with you too so if he goes through you can film him going through...

Hi STE,actually mate i went back home that way deliberately tonight. And the lights were fixed, the guy in the corner shop said they were done today. And also i noticed a camera on a pole one of these dome things at the lights,so you would have thought the council or highways agency would have know they were faulty.Dean
