guys, my omega, which was standing for the last 6 month had a couple times a nearly empty batterie, recharged and started, it would start and run for a long time even restart all over again for some days.
now i charged last time the batterie last tuesday, started and run.
i filled 5 litre petrol in as it was on 20 miles left according board computer. ( extented to 48 miles )
took it out for little ride today ( aorund 8 miles to Petrol Station which i never came too ), and even it showed 30 miles remaining petrol it cut out, and wouldn't start again.
just clicking. no turn on the startermotor.
got new batterie and tried again. no starter motor noise. just clicking.
no messages on computer, and no warning lights came on prior to cut out.
now i am thinking of startermotor, but why would it cut out while driving?
Batterie, possible, but why is nothing happend apart from the clicking noise with a new batterie ?
petrol ? maybe the computer is lying and its out of fuel ? but again, why is the startermotor not engaging ?
its a cdx 2000 reg 2.5 v6 automatic.
any help out there in the omega world to solve this issue ?
Thank you

A while ago my 3.0l would cut out on idle when hot andwhen trying to restart it sounded as though battery was flat.Leave it for 1/2 hour or so and it'd start and run fine!A new battery solved the problem, but as you've put a new battery on it it shouldn't be that.Clicking sound does point at starter issues, but check all connections[earths etc] before condemning it and I don't see how starter would cause cutting out problem.

Crank sensor.

Or if an estate and parked on any slope it could be fuel starvation...
Put another £20 in and Jack the lowest corner so that the car sits level...
Try again and report back :y

Sounds like you've got more than one issue. Cutting out while driving usually down to dodgy crank sensor as BG says above. However whilst this may stop it restarting, it won't stop it turning over. The clicking noise you describe could be down to a flat battery (unlikely in you case as you've put a new battery on it - assuming fully charged), but more likely due to a sticking or faulty starter solenoid.
Fuel starvation wouldn't stop it cranking over ;)

right. tried a leisure batterie with 950 ah, trying to turn but not enough to start.
tried a 750 ah batterie fully charged. trying to turn but not enough to turn mire then half a turn i guess. you can her th attempt to turn but is not turning the starter motor to start the bloody car.
it is not only clicking anymore, its actually triyng to turn the starter over now !!!
put also 10 litre fuel in it. just to make sure its enough to start.
finish with my mechanical skills. especially if i don't need it and now it seem i don't want it anymore.
i don't have the time the temperature and the will to dismantle the whole car to get it running.( and spending over 1 k in it in one year it seems its just a moneypit, as my other vauxhalls before )
i was hoping somthing easy to solve without buying oarts where i loose out big times again on it.
cant even locate the bloody startermotor.
looks on some pics i found as a 5 days job to go on it to give it a wack with a sledgehammer. lol

some dodgy electrical connection would stop the starter or make it turn slow on a full battery. Also same problem could stop the car while driving. it will be be in a fat lead probably close to the battery. could be the battery earth lead which would be nice and simple.

Swapping batteries will also flex the electrical leads. If one of the crimped connectors was already loose then that might be the final straw.

right. just been in garage. it the bloody starter motor. it starts by short cutting it or something like that but the starter motor is fubared.
anyone has one lying around ?
cheap and asap please.
i really would appreciate it.
its a
VAUXHALL Omega B 2.5i V6 1996-2004 12V 1.4Kw
speccs starter motor for this car. apparently the 3 litre version fit too.

i'm puzzled why that would cause a running engine to stop. possibly a massive short but the starter wouldn't get a electrical supply until you turned the key to start. maybe a short to the integral solenoid but seems a bit odd.

the old starter is out now.
looks like the mother of all omega starters.
aparently to my garage its the original one. 2000 reg. 135k.
the running cut off was down to no petrol. coouter tells 32 miles in it tank is dry. pump couldnt get any fuell.
and, there two types of starter for my omega. i let the garage now deal with it.
to windy. to old. yo wet for me.
so once is running getting sold.
out of 3 vauxhalls all made me major problems and costed too much for only being a car.
its a nice car but not worth the spending.
going back to ford now.
sorry but more reliable on high mileage and cheaper to fix and maintain.
thanks for all the help guys.

Good luck with the Ford, they can bee more challenging to fix when they play up, compared to the Omega and its known stock faults.
-
Mine still on it's original starter... Only done 274K...
Suspect you're on a hiding to nothing with that garage :-X
-
right. starter motor changed. no starting. dont know exactly if engine is turning or not. but the mechanic said some about engine maybe seized. hmmm.
-
Is the engine turning over with the new starter motor on?
-
gets even odder. on both my migs the range indicator was spot on - when it said one mile you had one mile. tested it twice on the old one and once on this one. only thing it was ever wrong about was if you went to zero then added a few litres, as you do doing a test. it keeps saying zero until you put a lot in, which is a test of your nerve.
if the engine was seized it would not have turned over on the old starter. any garage would know that, even a piss poor one. it would be hard to cause an engine to seize by (very badly) fitting a new starter. not impossible i suppose....
