Title: auto selector switch
Post by: pauls on 16 November 2015, 14:19:53
Some times when putting the car into park it does not click in. Also when turning the ignition back on the "foot on Brake test" thing on the cid doesnt come up it shows the radio station etc straight away.
The lights all seem to be in the right postion while in drive, reverse etc.

Would this be the selector switch or something else.

If it were me I'd be looking at the switch (the part on the side of the gearbox, underneath the car) which often gets oil and rubbish in them, which can cause issues. Hopefully comeone can offer you something else to check first, which isn't quite such a mucky job?!

 :)

My 2.6 sometimes does the opposite - I put my foot on the foot brake to take it out of 'park', but I can't hear the 'click' from the switch and it won't come out of 'park'. I have to press the foot brake a couple of times until the 'click' is heard before I can get it out of park, then it's all ok. Doesn't happen all the time, but until I know it's definitely the auto selector switch, and then sort it, I'll probably get stuck somewhere in 'park' at the most in opportune time.....

Easy enough to release. Yellow lever under gearstick gaiter

That's handy to know, thanks.
Going back to my own issue of occasionally getting stuck in park, would the symptoms I've given point to the auto selector switch being the problem?

I would check the brake light switch. This will affect both the locking of the gear selector in "Park" and the brake light test at startup. My guess is that your brake lights are permanently on!

An easy check to start off with then, but won't be able to do it until Weds. The brake light switch sounds like a bit of a back breaker to change.....

How do you check if this is working correctly..

Update on this.. Had this replaced with brand new one from dealers. It worked for a day and now cid just goes straight on radio station etc.
Any ideas please

Two questions

1) Are the brake lights always on or flickering?

2) If you grab hold of the brake pedal, is there any play or free movement in it?

Another test is if you sit in it with the gear selector in Park, ignition on, do you get a click from the park gate solenoid every time you press the brake pedal? .. or just once when you turn the ignition on?

Mmm.
I bet if you looked in the maintenance guides there might be a guide on how to clean the selector switch.

What i have noticed today is when you turn on the ignition the check brake screen comes up ok but as soon as you start the engine it jumps onto the radio.

Sounds like the brake light switch is too high or the spring is weak on the brake pedal or the servo is faulty (or all 3). - With the engine running the engine manifold vacuum causes some servo assistance and the pedal drops enough to trigger the switch.
