I seem to have this very intermittent issue with starting my diesel, sometimes I can go to the car switch on let the glow plug light go out and she will start straight away where is sometimes I can do the same start-up process and it will take a good 20 to 30 seconds of cranking for her to fire.
She had a replacement, albeit secondhand lift pump in the tank that I fitted just after I bought the car off DBG... Could it be she maybe needs a new lift pump? Or a vague recollection of someone in the past mentioning the leak off pipes? I'm not sure what these pipes do or where they are but are they important to starting? Or could it be the worst case scenario a whole and the actual pump is on its way out?

Hi Paul.
Best and easiest way of checking the lift pump if make sure you have over 1/2 tank of fuel in it. (might be more like 1/3, but 1/2 tank for safety) if it's starting regular as clockwork you at least know it's 'just' the pump. Ok, a bit of pain of a job, but they're common enough to source, at least. And you could, feasibly drive for 10 years with a failed lift pump, so long as there's that magic half a tank in, and the Weasel will start first time every time.
If still not starting well, then I think that's either glowplugs, iffy fuel feed, so perhaps even worth checking the fuel filter (ie: getting blocked up) the leakoffs can, I think, causes similar issues. Any suitable pipe, but memory says that off the shelf peugeot/PSA stuff is meant to be good for leakoffs. Leakoffs are in short 6 inch sections in 'C' shapes which run along the side of the engine, at the top, on the NS, just to the left of the large cast alloy manifold on the right. iirc.

If leaking from the leak-offs, you will know! I had one leaking slightly on the estate and it neatly coated the rear windscreen!:y

My estae would crank for a long time if fuel level was below quarter tank. Leak off pipes are a pain to do but get the replacement pipe from a diesel injection placd as it will be known good pipe. Injector 6 has a blanking piece on it which is a real pig to get to. Again, if replacing this, get from a good injection place

Also worth checking the glow plugs, only need 2 or more to go and that can cause issues.
You can check each plug in turn, they tend to go open circuit when snagged. Pull the GP Relay off and you can measure each plug in turn (6 thick black wires) they should measure about 2 ohms ish each to earth.
Also if there ok, check your getting +12v through the relay when the GP dash light is on, Volts should be GP side of the relay for about 3 to 5 seconds after the Dash light goes out.
