Title: Best way of dealing with racist bullies at work
Post by: 05omegav6 on 20 November 2015, 09:55:12
There's a person at work whom is of Indian origin. He unequivocally believes that he is always right and therefore has no need to heed any guidance or criticism, however well intentioned. This makes it almost impossible to reason with, often leading to conflict. Following a vocal debate he will then make every effort to be the innocent victim in front of anyone who wasn't present at the time. He has also tried to pull the race card for simply being called a knobhead. This didn't obviously stick and management were gobsmacked that he even tried.

He isn't very good at his job either from my dealings with him. But that could be an intentional ruse to make those with whom he doesn't get along with/like look incompetent.

I don't currently have any responsibility for him, but as a hilift driver I am reliant on him to marshall me on.and off aircraft. So i need to trust him, which clearly I cannot. I have also been asked to step upto a stand in supervisory role, which will be nigh on impossible to do if I become responsible for supervising him.

Twenty years ago, a quiet word outside would have sufficed, but this is now and that is clearly not an option.

So the question is this... How do you deal with a conniving, slippery weasel who will play the race card without blinking?

If you do get in to a position where you are responsible for him, learn your company's discipline procedures inside out and apply them robustly.  If he isn't pulling his weight start with an 'informal' warning.  This is usually a face-to-face interview with a witness for you, and any union reps for him, where his areas of failings are outlined and steps he needs to take to remedy plus a timeline.  If he fails to improve this can be stepped up to a formal warning, normally written and face-to-face and again with a timeframe for improvement.  Failure after this then gives a legal avenue for dismissal.

You are fully entitled to tell him to formally complain about any racial intolerance or discrimination he is subjected to, or keep quiet about it, each and every allegation must be investigated fully.  If it found to be completely false then this can be interpreted as salacious or dishonest behaviour and can instigate or be added to the disciplinary procedure above.

If you do end up in a position of authority I heartily recommend that you keep a diary of daily events. Nothing too verbose but with dates and times of key interactions, discrepancies and instructions given to all subordinates.  In an employment tribunal these are worth their weight in gold (as I have had the 'pleasure' of discovering)

Again this all depends on your company's disciplinary procedures.  If none exist (doubtful knowing your employer) then approach HR for advice (written)

Record all incidents (evidence as required) in a diary and then arrange a meeting with HR and the said person to discuss the conduct, pre meet with HR before hand.

Any chance you could lock him in a unpressurised cargo hold of something  :-X
Preferably on a nice long haul flight to Mumbai or something  :y :y  :D :D

Have a word with your boss and the HR department and put on record what has happened.
In fact, write EVERYTHING down that is happening even if its on a daily basis and hand it in but most of all, watch your back Al  ;)
These idiots will play the race card at every chance they get.
If you are having to rely on his judgement and you don't trust him, refuse to work with him full stop.
Also find out if anybody else has had problems with him in the past  ;)

also find out where he lives and what route he takes home.

Don't suppose he is a cyclist too is he  ::)  ;D ;D ;D :D :D :D

If he's not been there two years he can be dismissed without any reason. I'd make his boss aware of this and the issues with this chap.

Sadly this is not uncommon, playing the race card, I have even had to deal with it when training aircrew! I can only agree with the aforesaid advice, and the best of luck. :y

 :o :o

How long have you been out of the RAF Shack ??
Was this while in the mob or civvy street ?

When I was in, if you had that sort of attitude, you took a trip round the back of the hanger and got a dry slap  ;)

This happened in the RAF back in the early '70's, and also in BA later.

Not quite. There are exceptions to the 2 year rule, including discrimination on grounds of union activity, race, religion....... ;)
