Title: 5.1 Amp (Reciever)
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 14 July 2008, 19:13:21
If anyone comes across a micro 5.1 amp or reciever that would fit snugly on a book self I would be interested.

Need it for a bedroom but want to plug a DVD player into and if possible hook the 5.1 sound from the computer into it as well.

I allready have a Yamaha RDS Downstairs but the unit is way too big for the bedroom.

TIA.   :y

And what budget

Not bought any speakers for the bedroom, power needs dont need to bee anything fantastic.

Will go to £200 ish for the right amp, speakers only need to be smallish.  Would push to a total budget of £500 itf required.  Will be playing a lot of games through the computer.

Very impressive little system this one, ideal for the bedroom with the only large item being the sub!

Ignore TB, he knows nothing about audio systems!  :y

Currently running a full mission speaker setup with a very heavily modified top end Sony surround amp (I always modify the power supplies and tune the power stages) and DVD player plus a large home made sub

Its a Sony 1080 amp with a re-built rectifier and smoothing setup on the amp (fast recovery diodes with snubber caps and better smoothing caps parralled with additional low ESR caps dropping off at 0.01 increments to improve high F response).

It has also had the amp feedback re-tuned following the power supply change.

Front speakers are a set of Mission M74's with a Mission centre speaker (M71C?....cant remember) and some basic mission full rnage units for the rears.

Sub is a 300W RMS linear mosfet amp driving 4off 8 1/2 inch drivers wired series parralel and mounted in a large tuned cabinet. Pre-amp for this includes a phase changer, cut-off filter and a linearisation circuit. The clever bit is that the frequency response of the cabinet is the dominent factor and has close to a flat 6dB roll off which is then compensated for by the linearisation circuit....the result means that the response is less dependent on the drivers so cheaper drivers can be used  :y

So your amp is about 3 models on from mine - the 930 was better than both the 925 and the 940

Would it be worth messing about with my amps PSU?

Sub sounds interesting

All the amps are built to a price and this affects the quality of the components used. Improve the supply nad you get a better attack from the power stage as the series resistance of the supply is greatly reduced, the additional caps then help to spread this across the frequency spectrum.....One of the only things that sets the very high end amps appart is twin, triple or quadruple supplies.

You have to know what you are doing though!

The 940 does actually have a better power stage than the 930.....

When you're talking 'half-size' i've had a Sony STR-LV500 before, which is a nice bit of kit for the size, as long as you get the included sony cables (to connect to speakers of your choice)

Also the teac components are aesthetically lovely  ;)

SONY DAVIS10 is a very nice unit and the speakers would actually suit a bedroom better than most.

Am not sure if it is the unit for me though, size wise it is spot on.  But I am after an amp or reciever that will take my 5.1 Div-x player and also give me the chance to add the 5.1 output of my PC

I would go with the Sony but not sure it has the extra inputs.  But will at least try and find a store locally that sells it to go have  look and listen.

Also had a browse through the recievers the web site sells and looked at a Yanaha DAB Reciever.  Allthough physically too big for my plans I was impressed the the sellers priceing.  Checked it out else where and was £60/100 cheaper than anyone else.

It has optical, coax and analogue inputs....so can take the bit stream from the PC or external player.
