Title: Calling Jasonm.....
Post by: tunnie on 13 December 2015, 00:01:43
Wonder if I could ask what the police can do, or what powers they have in a situation like this.

We were sat on our sofa, just about an hour or so ago. We then heard a massive crash and bang, looked in the back garden to see a car in there! The b@started then reversed out and drove off  :o  >:(

We are in a town, he must having been going stupid speed to crash through a metal fence, our wooden fence and take out some concrete posts.

Luckily his number plate came off! So have a full details of it, we gave it to the police who said they would make a call on the registered driver. But in a situation like this, can they prove who was driving? There would be damage to the car.  :-\

I googled the reg and actually found an advert for it's sale some time ago.

Leaving the scene of an accident having caused third party damage and or injury.
Failing to report such an incident. Although they have seven days before offending iirc...
Plus anything else... DUI/Careless/Dangerous etc...

What do AskMid/Dvla vehicle check say?

Not a good way to spend an evening though... :o

Fences are repairable, glad that was it though, could be alot worse :-\

Could have been a lot worse. Little MissT's bedroom looks onto the garden, she slept through it all!

Tax is due on said car soon, other than that got basic details. Plus photos from its sale some time ago.

Think his mate cruised by earlier, in a similar car. Bet he was looking for the number plate  ::)

All safe though, as you say fence can be repaired.

I'd hang onto the number plate and pass the details on to your house insurance, especially if you have legal cover. Let them chase him, as the Police may or may not bother.

Obviously press the Police to act too, though.

The legal cover bit is on any insurance policy... Often misunderstood that Legal a Cover is Legal Cover. You don't need it on every policy ;)

Glad all are ok and the only casualty is a fence (that, IIRCC, you were planning to replace?)

I'm guessing that car will be coming to a breakers yard near you today or tomorrow or will be reported as stolen, you should be able to claim off the owners insurance regardless for some new garden features etc. Glad all are well !

Somehow, I can't see tunnie putting up fences on Xmas morning ;D

Joking aside, glad all is well, in the scheme of things, it could have been very serious.

Sods law it was the good fence, the proper one, not the one made of A4 paper. That's the other side of our house!

Had a note through the door from local copper, asking for our contact details as they wanted to pass on drivers insurance details. So looks like they have caught him/her and they have fezzed up! - Not sure why they just did not knock on the door though, guess it was during the night.  :-\

Just spoken to very helpful people on 101, officer will be calling us tonight to provide us with details of the driver so we can use our insurance. As the 'ARB' looks to be complete, I won't need to fill out an accident form at the station.

Good news. Sounds like it should be straightforward and there's one chav who'll hopefully be driving more carefully in future.

I'll lay odds on the driver being P1$$ED  >:( >:( >:( >:(

However, unless caught at the time there ain't much we could do. As far as reporting it - you have 24 hours to report an accident before classed as FTS.  :-\

The said as the ARB was complete, I may not need to report it at the station, as it was already done?

Yup.

I, probably like many others, do not know/realise/easily get carried away/etc what would push me into an inability to drive safely.  So I choose to keep to soft drinks if I'm driving.

I do sometimes worry about the next day when I've had a sherbert or 2 the night before.

Well full credit to Surrey Police, just phoned me and supplied all the details. I've always been impressed with my dealings with them and Surrey Heath Council.

They have provided the drivers name, contact number and full insurance details. Apparently he was a local Indian lad, living at home. Police called at his parents, who then called him. His story is that his 'tyre blew' - This is not something myself, the Police Officers or the witness will agree with  ::)

He panicked and drove off to the Co-Op is his version, bought some ciggys  ???

He handed himself into the Police Station, passed breath test, no issues there. He also said he wants to avoid insurance, as he know's 'local trade people'  ::)

But as the officer said, this is my call not his. I allowed police to supply the lad with my contact email, I've told them he needs to supply in writing his version of events and why/how not to use insurance.

I want the little sh!t to grovel and explain his actions. Anyone could have been hurt, he just drove off.  >:(

I plan to still use insurance, should teach him a lesson.

Now that boils my piss somewhat.  He has admitted to the 'accident' and THEN admitted to driving a car on a public highway to a shop for a pack of fags with a blown out tyre.

Truth or 'dangle berries', by his own (stupid) admission, that's dangerous driving right there!

Fair play to the little shit for blowing negative though (assuming he was the driver).

See how quick they are to deal with it, I have no leverage with this other company. They could easily drag their feet, there is no interest for them to resolve it quickly.

I will contact them though, for options. See what they say.

I've just changed my home insurer, got the quote through on renewal from Lloyds & wanted £381!!! :o :o :o rang them up after doing the internet & they said 'oh I'll see what we can do as you're a valued customer' They knocked £20 off!!!!  >:(

When I told them we've not had any claims in the 5 or so years we've been with them (no claims at all before them) they just said 'well insurance at the moment is very unpredictable it can go up and down a lot' Then I told em that on the website their price was £121 they said 'that's for new customers' They wouldn't budge any further so I told em where they could stick it!!!  >:( >:(

I actually quite like that, can imagine it with shorter tops and with some jasmin weaving in and out of it.  More for decorative/zoning inside the garden rather than securing the borders but I for one like that style.  *scratches chin about buying some bamboo.....

Convea or Covea? If the latter then they're big. Do a lot of trade work, including mine! As the insured party they were very slow, glacial actually (but trade policies generally are and require you to do the legwork), but I am led to believe they were quick in dealing with the third party when one of my lads had a bump.

You'll have to have patience I'm afraid, Tunnie. You'll have to do the insurance claim dance, quotes and negotiations, until you think you're getting a reasonable deal. They're in no hurry, their fence hasn't been knocked down.

Indeed, they said it can take 2 weeks for someone to come out and look at it.  >:(

I need to arrange quotes too, take time out of my day to organise for people to come visit and quote and send the details and photos to insurance. So I should really charge for my time!  ::)

Well I wondered that, but it stated a diameter of wire inside. The old metal fence, is covered in plastic/PVC.
