Title: Park Assist
Post by: Sir Tigger KC on 17 December 2015, 20:38:02
I gave my mate a lift to the VW dealer today to pick up his shiny new Tiguan.  :y

Nice car, not really my cup of tea to be honest, but some interesting features and the most impressive was the 'Park Assist' where the car parks itself!  :D

It's a very strange feeling doing a parallel park with no hands on the wheel, although I did note that the salesman picked a massive space for his demo!  ::)  and he didn't really respond to my suggestion that they have 2 brand new Touareg's parked up in their dealership for demos!  ::) ;D

If you have to buy a car that can park itself, why not just buy K.I.T.T
All these driving aids are going to cost money to repair when broken, and then how are they going to park when it is broken?

The other thing which I thought was a good idea coming from a very hilly area, where people can't seem to do hill starts ::),  is an electronic automatic park brake!  8)

So when you stop with your foot on the footbrake, the park brake automatically engages and then as you raise the clutch the brake disengages slowly eliminating 'roll back'.  :y

MrsGK and I had a go of an all-electric Golf in Wolfsburg. One of the features, among being utterly eerie and slightly dull, was the Park Assist. The demo-sales-German-woman wasn't impressed when I managed to make it abandon the car at a jaunty angle, despite following her instructions to the letter. The car was like "BEEP - done!" "Er, no you're really not"....

So crude !,Touareg has hill hold assist, brakes apply without brake lights and release when you go to move off, really good when the caravan is attached and combined weight is over 4tons !!.

Nah, do a Webby.

Left foot on brake, right foot on throttle (to the floor)... wait until the transmission starts to smoke profusely, then quickly release the brake.  When the Speedometer reaches 30mph, click the start button on the stopwatch.  As the needle approaches 54mph, click the stop button.  Log into OOF and post results.  :P

So does my Merc & Smart .... doesn't work quite the same as your VW though  ;) ;) I've always found my left foot to work better though  :y

My (plated)  gross train weight is only around 3.7 t  ;)

Clearly it's just programmed to park like most people seem to around here.. >:(

I wonder if there were similar discussions about automatic transmissions when they started appearing in the mainstream in the US in the 40s-50s, and over here 50s-60s.

I'm personally in the camp who is against a car that can park itself, if you can't park, you should't be driving. That's why they have a driving test. Personally think there should be compulsory 'refresher' courses once every 10 years.

That all said, I could well have been in the camp in the 1940s who were against automatics, citing the same reasons - 'if you can't change gear you shouldn't be driving.' etc...  :-\

Yeah, if you can't set your own ignition advance using the stalk provided on the column, you shouldn't be driving, dammit!

The thing is with the parking assist is that it only does the steering for you, so you still have to accelerate and brake. Plenty of room for error there!  :D  ;D

 :o ??? :o

Riiight!! Well, that smacks a little of when people advertise something as 'mint - apart from the small amount of damage'  :D

As you say plenty of room for error!

They could very easily program it do it the whole lot, but then VW/ whoever would be liable if it decided to have a brainstorm and start mullering the car in front...

Yes it's just like parking sensors and the screen shows your position as well.  Changes colour too!  :y

In fairness, it'll only choose a space long enough to park a 747 in.  No good for the average 'inner city' parking.
